I am excite because I assume Gainax will attempt to produce a BD like Gunbuster and not like what Sunrise has been doing to Gundam.

but he's right.
>>
>>121907660

I don't think it does.

>>121909135

Cels don't matter after they've shot them. It's the reels of film that matter, and those were hopefully preserved enough to make a decent transfer. I don't believe companies when they say they don't have the materials anymore, they said that about Lodoss forever and then look what happened.
>>
Where do I preorder? I've never preorded Jappon BDs before.
>>
>>121907193
Seeing how 3.33 is coming up, i'm gonna assume a western release is out of the question
>>
>>121909585

Probably for a good year or more. This is a hot fucking property that reaches beyond regular otakudom and it would be retarded to let the West have a BD out so soon.
>>
>>121909692
Then i'm gonna assume the japenese release will have english subtitles (I've never imported before so i don't know if this is the norm or not). If so then buying this shit will be really tempting.
>>
>>121909969

I doubt they'll include subs or dubs. That's really the one area Japan should try working harder on.
>>
>>121909969
I highly doubt it. Most of the time JP releases have neither. You might wanna brush up on BD authoring and subtitle formats now so you can author add custom subs when the time comes

Looks a little soft, but that may be an effect of it being 16mm rather than an abundance of DNR.
>>
>>121912614
Perhaps the worst part is, people who don't usually pay attention to what to them is a nuance in quality will get the idea that those BD releases ARE what is good. I guess it's like certain fashions, where even if something realistically looks totally shit or stupid, the fact that a brand name is associated with it negates that poor quality. Unfortunately that seems to be the mindset present in modern art in general, though.
>>
>>121912797

It's still DVNR'd to a certain agree, but nowhere near as bad as that or Aristocats. Cinderella and Lady and the Tramp are mostly the same as PP there, and it's really not until the Fox and the Hound and Little Mermaid that they release BDs that don't look awful.

DBZ is stuck in that mess -- Funimation has trained their mass market fans that 'cropped to 16:9 and filtered' is the way to go ever since the orange brick DVDs in 2007, so releases like the Levels (pic related) get canned because those same mass market people cry 'muh black bars' and '4:3 isn't HD', and and this >>121911181 becomes a best seller.
>>
>>121912855
Yeah, it may just be that their older movies' film stock wasn't preserved very well.
At least their 90s movies that were mastered digitally like Aladdin managed to turn out great.
I just wish I could find good rips of the rest of the Disney lineup. It's sad how shitty so many rips of their BDs are. It's either some Italian rip, or fucking Yify garbage.
>>121912936
Nadia was a rarity for TV anime in that it was shot entirely on 35mm film. 35mm is usually reserved only for high-budget OVAs and movies.
>>
>>121912970
>>121912989
Eva is 16mm, right?
>>
>>121912909
I think Aniplex helped backed TTGL's dub and US release originally, so that's why. Same with Fate/Zero and KLK. I dunno what Gainax/Khara's involvment with Eva's original US release was like.
>>
>>121913036
Yep, as is virtually every show. Some older ones got shot on 8mm which results in the effect of watching anime in a hail of golfballs.
>>
>>121913036
Yes. The OP and ED were shot with 35mm, since those were going to be played over and over. But the bulk of the show was just 16mm. So the BDs should have a graininess similar to the early episodes of Gunbuster.

The only things that were likely shot on 8mm would be super cheap stuff from the 60s. And then it was pretty much all 16mm until the mid-90s when budgets started going up, so shows like Escaflowne and Gundam Wing appear to be 35mm.

There was very, very little animation shot with 8mm at a professional level past 1965 in Japan. About the most famous animation you'd see on 8mm would be Gainax's Daicon shorts.

I'm pretty sure a lot of early digital anime was made specifically in NTSC format, i.e. FLCL or Initial D's first couple series. So the masters are in SD and there's nothing to be done. Someone correct me but i think GITS:SAC was the first digital TV anime shot in HD?
>>
>>121913287
The early 2000s were seeing the beginning of mass-produced digitally-colored and rendered anime. Many artists and directors didn't know how to deal with it, so a lot of them have horrible, over saturated colors and very little detail.
There's also the fact that because they were mastered digitally at the standard of the time, 480p, there is no film to go back to for easy remastering to a high definition.
>>
>>121913287
Even today it's surprisingly rare for digital shows to be mastered at 1920x1080, in fact 720p is still not always targeted.
>>121913350
Yeah, NTSC-J was generally used directly rather than mixed down to. It's a fucking horrendous workflow.

I actually bought this after somehow missing the reviews and holy shit was I mad that they butchered this.

The widescreen crop is unfortunate as well, but a lot of the time animated films were done in 4:3 but matted for theatrical showings. In that sense cropping it isn't entirely incorrect, but for the prices Disney charges they should offer both aspect ratios.
>>
>>121913409
>someone paid $30 for a Sword in the Stone BD

Holy shit imagine their disappointment once they put it in the player.
>>
>>121913409
Well, the theaters at the time of SitS release were still playing movies in 4:3. It wasn't until the late 40s that wide screen really started to become popular and it really exploded in the 50s as a must-have feature for cinemas, since it was something televisions of the time couldn't replicate.
>>
>>121913409

To me, if something was produced in 4:3, I don't care about the intended aspect for viewing, I want as much image as I can get. Besides, animators labored to draw that stuff, so cutting it out is just an insult to their work.

Thanks for the replies, I enjoy these informative threads. It's a shame that so many shows from the last 15 years will never be available to us above 480p. It's also a shame that few TV anime even now are made in natural 1080, I can name nyaruko-san because IIRC it was the first, but not much else.

The DVD was likely made from a BetaMax, or DigiBeta tape. They were horrible at maintaining good quality and color consistency. Which is why remastering, that is going back to the master film reels, started to become a thing with DVDs. That's carried over even better with the high-definition capabilities of Blu-Ray.

Wasn't this thread supposed to be about Eva BDs?
I just hope RX782 isn't too busy to encode them when they come out.

Has anyone ever put together a master list of which old anime blu-rays are good and which are shit? I feel like for every Lodoss War and Gunbuster, there's an Initial D or Sailor Moon to counter it.

Trigun BD when?

There's that old list, but it's more about the sources themselves.
