I watched Akira last weekend. The animation was really jaw dropping and I liked the cyberpunk style, but the plot didn't exactly resonate with me. It seemed like Tetsuo was just being a psychopath for no good reason other than "Kaneda, you've been too helpful".

The problem with most new stuff from Matsumoto is that the pacing is all over the place, and some of the late 00's stuff like Maetel Symphony, which I personally still enjoyed to a degree, were pretty shitty all around compared to stuff like SSX.
Even Queen Emeraldas had an amazing start and nosedives pretty fast in the last story.
Yet, I'm one of those few that enjoyed both Cosmo Warrior Zero and Gun Frontier even if they were objectively poorly handled.

I find it's a certain lacking of characterization that was so strong in the earlier Matsumoto works.
Cosmo Warrior Zero was pretty bad, I think mainly because the protagonist was so weak in terms of character compared to the guy he was supposed to find and capture: The Captain himself.
I did like Gun Frontier but mainly because it was a decent western, lots of plot threads ending hard and fast (as they probably should on a frontier) and seeing Harlock as a side-kick to Tochiro was nice too.
I don't know how but the newer things just don't lack the spark in characters that the older series had, I wouldn't chalk this up to nostalgia because I've only watched these in the last 2 years or so. Ozma is a good example of how something is just missing.

Yup, I thought exactly the same thing.
One thing that I like about the new series is that as retellings/expansions of the original universe it's nice to get all the references to the older works, Maetel Symphony was chock full of those, but again, the quality of the work itself is pretty low from almost all points of view compared to the older works like GE999, the GE OVAs, SSX and a few other things like Queen Millennia.
Truly a pity since the designs and ideas behind those works are lamost always pretty good, Endless Odissey is perhaps the only high quality late series with all its problems.

For maximum inter-leijiverse goodness the best bet is to watch the three Galaxy Express movies, after you finish the main series of course. Despite being titled Galaxy Express it's more like fanservice if you love Harlock. They even havethe Yamatobriefly appear in the last movie if I recall right. Happens in DNA Sights too but terrible video quality there.
Still waiting on Live-Evil to finish subbing the Queen Millennia TV series, halfway there now.

Yeah, as long as the crushing sadness doesn't make you want to kill yourself, the Queen Millennia OVA is guilty of that as well despite being beautiful.
Also, be advised that Queen Millennia TV is veeeeery long winded, possibly more than GE999 TV, the movie did a much better job at telling the story and developing the characters if you ask me.
But I mean, if you chugged all GE999 I don't think you'll have problems with that, do watch the movie though, it's great.

I've been trying to watch Galaxy Express 999, but I made it 30 some odd episodes in, and fucking nothing is happening. I have also been irritated by the fact that they have said multiple times "The train stops for no one, must always stay on schedule and must always have a ticket" then they break those rules every few episodes.

I have been watching exclusively pre-2000 anime the past few months because I previously neglected to do so.
Right now I am watching Gundam Wing, Escaflowne, and CCS.
CCS is so good.It Outstanding even. It is pretty impressive how a show meant for literal little girls manages to look better, and do drama, suspense, romance (sort of), and action better then most anime. Not to mention the great OST and the legitimately likable characters that actually change and develop.

Marathoning the last two arcs in Utena tonight then I might start Hokuto no Ken tomorrow, I read the manga a while ago so I'm looking forward to watch it, though it was a toss up between that or Future Boy Conan on what retro show I watch next. I was thinking of just getting Neo's BD rips for FBC since I have Live Evil's.

It lacks all those cool dials and actual mechanics seen in Gunbuster. It feels far less tangible and not as rough as the ships/mechanics seen in Gunbuster.

Yeah, Diebuster isn't a good as Gunbuster, I really didn't like the big reveal about Nono at all but the ending to 06, starting with Nono coming through that space rip hit me so hard, probably because I love TTGL a lot.
Also that epilogue is perfect.

Psychological pressure and superior tactics, Harlock made Queen Rafflesia and all the Mazone soldiers shit themselves when they realized they couldn't even scratch the Arcadia or hurting him, Harlock was also pretty fucking motivated by the fact that Miyu is living on Earth, he wouldn't let anyone touch her, if you rememberthe part when Rafflesia porjects her Hologram on the Arcadia's deck to troll Harlock she gets scared shitless once he remembers about Miyu and makes that fucking awesome speech.
At some points the Mazone went batshit crazy and even tried to zerg rush Harlock with the only result of being fucking slaughtered.
Since we're talking about /m/ stuff, you guys should totally watch Macross Plus if you haven't already, great stuff.
I was playing Macross Triangle Frontier a few days ago and I had to rewatch that, even the CG is pretty decent considering how old it is.

At the end of GunbusterIt's not really sad because they still succeed, and the people they left behind on Earth were never really as central to the plot.
With DiebusterThe fact that Nono sacrifices herself, and with her relationship with Lal'C makes for a much harder to take end.The epilogue also hits hard, and it only does that because Gunbuster was also so very good.

I don't know, that hit me like a fucking truck thateverybody they ever knew about was long dead and then being remembered after thousands of years.
It's a bittersweet ending for sure. It wasn't nearly as tragic as Windaria though, I was shaking with fits of rage and sadness after that. The only anime that really felt like it suckerpunched me.

I didn't like the change from Gunbuster's more realistic setting to the weird science fantasy setting in Diebuster. The living busters and weird magic abilities the pilots had didn't do it for me. I guess the way the coming of age story was told in Diebuster didn't resonate with me either for some reason. It was like Gunbuster if it were mixed with too much cuhrayzee and had looser storytelling.

I have been reading/watching some Rumiko stuff lately. I read up to volume 11 of the Ranma manga, then watched the first BD box, and then read up to volume 22, which I believe is the where the anime adapts up to, not that it does it without a lot of filler/anime original stuff padding it out.
I also watched the first 20 something episodes of Urusei Yatsura before realizing I should read the manga first, but I am only one volume into it so far.
Also have some Ranma butt.
Eventually I will get to Maison Ikkoku as well.

Not only that, but the storytelling itself was just awful. Gundam Wing had this great blend of serious political drama and absurd melodrama that made it a blast to watch. Endless Waltz started out retarded and ended retarded. It was probably the little kid's fault.
