Tension and drama are out their best as each character is pushed to their own breaking point. You see a bit of who they are outside of the parts you'd normally tend to see, not just the positive bits, but when they're really cornered.
It's the human focus route, all the humans get a lot of development all around.

It's not as bad as it sounds. At least the worms acted as an aphrodisiac inside her body, so eventually she was conditioned to accept and physically enjoy being raped. And by the time she finally gets to enjoy sex with the person she loves, her experience impresses him to the point that his inner monologue remarks on her skill as akin to that of an educated prostitute. So she really didn't come out of it empty-handed.
