For anime it's the same. If you wish to discuss mecha, then you better know your Tomino, and your Anno, and all those other important titles. /a/ can't even manage to do that though. I ran into people who thought NGE is an example of an original story.

There's the sensible way of finding anime to watch, and the dole-bludger's way.
One involves doing a bit of research to find out whether or not it conforms to my tastes.
The other involves just watching whatever you can find, because there's nothing to lose; it's not like time spent watching would be invested anywhere else.

I thought Madoka was good, but mainly as an alternative take on magical girl series and not this enormous success it's become. I can't imagine rewatching it and I haven't bothered with the movies yet.
It's one of those shows I'd suggest someone really familiar with anime watch, but low power level people probably skip since it won't mean as much.
