LiSA's 'This Illusion' was certainly the best thing musically to come out of UBW. Man that OST was such a disappointment, so forgettable. Fukasawa really dropped the ball. The VN soundtrack certainly isn't a masterpiece but at least it had some memorable tunes. Fukasawa's stuff sounds mostly like boring ambient stuff. But to his defense, the sound director didn't use the music all to well with a lot of cutting out during tense moments.

Sound direction-wise the major difference between Zero and UBW is that there's simply a lot /more/ music in UBW. Pretty much all of the music is written for the scene it's played in. Zero on the other hand reused music repeatedly. Not to bad effect mind you, but there's certainly more budget put into UBW's sound.
In terms placement though I'm not seeing any particularly large difference. Maybe the vocals more through more for people? In terms of instrumentation Fukasawa backed off on doing that.

I think it has a lot more variety, at least. Zero kept a pretty consistent tone with its soundtrack: brooding, melancholy, and big action, and all with pretty much the same instruments.
Yeah, it's largely unremarkable. It's not awful, but it doesn't hold a candle to Kenji Kawai and Yuki Kajiura's works in the other two adaptations. Still, I'm somewhat curious about the OST release.
