Can bright lolis really do calculus in Japanese elementary school? No wonder America is falling behind in education.

Normally, yes. In the 50's in France 10 year old girls was all able to do it. That + speaking perfect german. Also, all girl schools. Good old times.

Is...Is this for real? People are pretty mad around here with the new ''reform'', but its nowhere near this. No wonder americlaps hate this common core shit
>>
>>121322953
I don't get why they leave calculus for so long, It was only introduced to me at 16 (in the UK). They should really start with the easy shit sooner.
>>
People make a big deal out of Common Core Math, but all it's really doing is trying to teach idiots how smart people do math. Which is obviously not gonna work.
A better example would be 8+5=13. Some people have trouble seeing this, like I did way back in kindergarten. So I just broke it up into 3+5+5=13, which is easier since 5+5 comes out as 10 insanely fast in my mind and then I just tack on the 3.
Written out on paper, it's obviously gonna look dumb. But these weird operations come out super fast in the mind. CC just tries to make a habit out of making those weird operations so they can be applied to more complex problems.
I'm not advocating it at all, as I said before this is obviously gonna fail.
>>
>>121323830
>People are pretty mad around here with the new ''reform''
Poland?
>>
>>121323561
This is an example of a naive way of implementing subtraction with using negate and minus operators.
>>
>>121323843
The idea is that you have to build the fundamentals first, so you have to teach algebra, then geometry, then trigonometry or calculus.
>>
>>121323873
Well I said new but it's actually like 10 years old , province of Québec, Canada. We use a different system than the rest of Canada for highschool etc, but I'm unsure about ''the way we learn''
>>
>>121323965
>you have to build the fundamentals first
I wasn't taught the fundamentals (the axioms of ZFC) before university.
>>
>>121323561

>>
>>121323965
Yeah, but why not start with that earlier. Basic calc (I'm talking straight forward differentiation and integration along the lines of f(x) = x^n) is as easy as algebra, the concepts are not even difficult.
>>
Here in America the standards have been lowered incredibly far, to the point where teachers are forced to pass a certain amount of students or they lose their job.
This is also the reason why most jobs require college now, because modern college is the equivalent of high-school 60 years ago.
This shit is ruining America
>>
>>121324103
It's as easy as algebra if all you're teaching students to do is naively carry out the process without understanding what they're doing, but I don't consider that a useful way to learn.
>>
>>121323827
yes, but you don't need it, you only need the binomial theorem

(1+ n)^p = n^p + p n^(p-1) + (p choose 2) n^(p-2) +... + (p choose p-2) n ^2 + p n + 1

you subtract the summands that aren't divisible by p, and the other are divisible by p since p is prime and remains as a factor in each binomial coefficient.

what's the problem? is it frustrating to not earn anything until your are in your 20's?
>>
>>121324016
>10 years old
That's quite old, but the reforms are usually considered shit by most people, the reform in Poland was really shit because they had redesigned the high-school certificate exam, but they didn't give any information about how is it going to look like until you were in the second year (the law says that they should reveal it while you're in your first year)

>>121324469

What?
>>
>>121324278
Nothing, but the way schools teach STEM subjects is fucktarded and doesn't help students understand how anything works, so as soon as they encounter a problem that can't be solved with a memorised process most of them can't cope.

All school level maths in western countries teaches students to do is solve problems that they have been shown how to solve.
>>
>>121324469
She's using calculus to solve a geometry/trig problem.
>>
>>121324331
See this is why I hate common core currently. The simple fact of the matter is that schools currently work on the assumption that all students are created equal and that they all have the same needs upon graduation, which is just flat out wrong and naive, and common core exasperates this. What we should be doing with schools is giving everyone a solid foundation of math, science, and language in primary, then using secondary school to figure out what the kids are good at, what they think they're good at, and what they want to do after school, and tailor their entire secondary schooling experience after those criteria.

A maths teacher of mine once said that if you insist on using a crane to pick up a screwdriver you might as well use the biggest crane you can find.
>>
>>121323561
I can understand why you would use this kind of thinking to teach kids that they can add something together one bit at the time without changing the result. I can also see it being useful as a trick to make mental addition easier.

But why would you teach kids this as a way to tackle the problem in writing. Is the new problem that the old problem is being translated to actually easier?

when talking about this to the oldest generations (70 & up) this apparently resembles a method employed back before the industrial revolution.
Henry Fords thoughts on education focused on simple, efficient, and just enough to be useful in the business world. and he had the influence to change the educational system to fit his views. that was the method we all learned growing up since the industrial revolution.
this new common core approach to math seems to hearken back to what we had before that.
>>
>>121323561
It's funny how it takes longer and is less intuitive than the "old" way.

Tell me again WHY is this a thing?
>>
Euros are stupid. They can speak more than one language, but that's not intelligence since a child's capacity for language is completely infinite before the age of 7. In chemistry or physics - the shit that actually MATTERS - they have about the same level of education as a cocker spaniel.

Ditto for Nips. Do you realize a 30 is passing over there? A FUCKING 30?
>>
>>121323561
The purpose of common core was to expose students to abstract ideas early on to escape "drilling" and repetitive calculations.
In reality all it did was create children that know set theory but can't do arithmetic (future engineers).
>>
>>121324674
>Is the new problem that the old problem is being translated to actually easier?
I don't think its supposed to be about ease, its about ensuring kids have a better grasp of number theory so they don't grow up to be fucktarded adults.
>>
>>121324773
