>this was made instead of a proper Muv Luv trilogy
where did they even find this shitty light novel and think "yeah, this could make a movie!"
Before you judge the movie, consider dat ass.
Believe it or not, Tom Cruise looks exactly like the MC from the manga / light novel, apparently, and because the studio that bought the publications had planned on serializing it anyway, they thought that apparently tom cruise on the big screen in an adapted version of the LN / Manga would make a more entertaining and fitting MC in place of it being an animated series.
Not sure why though, but that's pretty much how it happened. Next time use google and a couple information sites and find this shit out by yourself instead of taking up space on the front page that could be used for actually decent threads
There are no actually decent threads on /a/ anymore ;_;
A̶l̶l̶ ̶Y̶o̶u̶ ̶N̶e̶e̶d̶ ̶I̶s̶ ̶K̶i̶l̶l̶ E̶d̶g̶e̶ ̶o̶f̶ ̶T̶o̶m̶o̶r̶r̶o̶w̶ Live Die Repeat was good, but for some reason it got absolutely no mainstream attention.
I don't even know how you'd make Muv-Luv: Alternative work. It relies too much on the medium.
Do you really think hollywood could make anything good out of almost 100 hours worth of story?
Hollywood can hardly make anything good out of a movie someone already made these days.
Most of the reason muv luv is good is because of the ridiculous amount of buildup and slow pacing for the training etc.
OP here, I'm not saying it was bad, and in fact I did enjoy it(mostly cause I have a hard on for timeloops), certainly better than a lot of recent action films
but all I could think of watching it was "man, there are a billion better anime-like materials that could be adapted", specifically watching the beach assault I couldn't stop fantasizing about Operation 21st and the Sadogashima Hive attack.
you don't need to adapt it all, in fact you'd probably just be better off making your own Total Eclipse side story inside the universe.
So, how would you go about adapting Sumika's engorged clitoris in live action?
ML has terrible pacing and would be shit for literally 70% of it unless the audience is somehow into a poor man's SoL moeshit (no, being ironic doesn't make it good) and willing to wait forever to get to the good parts.
Yet, if they just skip most of the buildup, people will be complaining the movie was rushed and generic.
M8, I wanted to watch this with
my dadthis weekend. Is it a good movie and do you recommend it?
nah man, it wouldn't take long for you to create the idea of "this is a normal happy world", maybe 20minutes max of a 90minute film, all the romance subplots can be cut entirely, all you need to know is "this is the main character, these are his close friends, they are all happy"
then you jump right into Unlimited, training, Military drama, island test, surprise BETA attack, shooting down the shuttle climax, end of the year party, then Alternative 5
final scene is humanity abandoning earth with Takeru looking up at the sky from the cockpit of his Fubuki
cut to scene of takeru waking up back in his bed, opening the door, and Boom, we cliff hang into Alternative
The BETA are basically constructed entirely from Frodomium. There's so much dumb shit about them it would basically make it impossible to adapt simply because it completely destroys suspension of disbelief.
>immune to artillery
but they aren't?
and really, is it any dumber than the aliens from Edge of Tomorrow?
is it any dumber than War of the Worlds walkers?
is it any dumber than Independence Days impenetrable shields?
you don't need to explain anything, Aliens simply exist to over power humanity, everyone accepts this fact already
Yes. Basically every conventional weapon was handwaved as useless because of Lasers.
Which is half the problem, since middle school physics class would teach you all you need to know to counteract them.
Previews aren't "mainstream attention".
It had a $178 million budget and a $100 million box office. ($28 first week) The renaming to "Live Die Repeat" occurred afterward. There's obviously some sort of marketing crisis.
Could work, but even though Muv-Luv has pacing issues I think that a movie format would be too short for it. Unless you make two or three Alternative movies that is (national arc, kagoshima arc, sakura arc).
exactly, that is what I am saying, they are Aliens, ergo, things like Laser classes can exist, since aliens themselves exist outside the realm of possibility.
just like how no weapon, not even a nuke could break the shields from Independence day.
>In the end, all laser-class really do in the LN is justify the existence of TSFs.
it's a lot more reasonable than say the idea of jaegers from Pacific Rim, and people didn't mind that either.
>why didn't they switch to G bombs
what is alternative V?
also because G bombs destroy, the earth, life, and even fabric of space?
I think they would have to make the first half of the movie EXTRA with all the happy shit
LACROSSE ARCand then they slap you into Unlimited so everyone can be excited about the tweest. Then like with what >>121297251 said they cut to Alternative at the end credits. Shia Lebouf as Takeru
Like, I don't think MuvLuv could be adapted in any sort of medium besides VNs. I mean, it definitely has too much content for a movie, even if the movie was really long; it's just too massive. And if they tried to make it into an anime, it'd be too hard to get the green light for a season two if season one was Extra. Extra is great when you tie it in with the rest of the story, but Extra by itself isn't anything special (albeit intentionally) and the viewership just wouldn't be there, I feel. If this was a Western series as opposed to an anime, this point would be even more significant, I think.
I did think Edge of Tomorrow was great though, and it definitely made me think of MuvLuv.
Is there any fan group doing a translation of TE?
Most mecha have some plot-related thing to justify the existence of their mechs. EVAs have AT fields, Gundams have Minovinsky particles, and TSFs have laser-class. It's nothing new and is completely fine, because mechs kinda don't make sense in our reality.
There already exist anti-laser armor technology. You just need a material which will poof out and produce a cloud on hit. After the initial impact, the energy of the laser will be absorbed into the cloud instead, away from the surface.
Of course, this armor can eventually be depleted and wind/acceleration will disperse the cloud.
Wich is why the first waves are usually filled with chemical creating a screen once it explode, wich prevent them from destroying the following waves of normal rounds and ends up with the BETA being fucked.
It's just that there are so much of them that they can't kill them all with artillery, just enough to make it more survivable for their main force.
This too. Muv-Luv tried to have some more justifications for it having mechs since it tried to be somewhat realistic. But even though it tries to be sci-fi, it can't be "hard sci-fi" because the whole setting is deep into fantasy territory anyway.
It's just like Anno animes, it uses sciences to make the crazy shit believable inside the setting so that we can relate to it, but outside of that setting it's just crazy shit.
>to counter laser classes
you can't be serious
because muh gundam references
They DO have armor, it's just that laser-class lasers are so powerful that it doesn't last long enough. So they instead opt for more agile TSFs with a little armor. They can withstand a standard laser-class for a couple of seconds and have automatic evasive maneuvers built in. I don't think it helps with super-lasers, though.
I'm pretty sure a smokescreen-type cloud was employed in at least one of the MLA VNs, but the problem was that it was administered via TSF. I'm not sure how else you would disperse it except via special artillery bombing, since flying aircraft to do so would defeat the purpose.
Im pretty sure that Alternative was released on the same year as All you need is kill, while Unlimited was released before it since it was with Extra right from the beginning. And given the production value, I don't think that Alternative was made in the few months that followed Ayik's release.
It's more of a coincidence that anything. Military has always been a big theme in mecha, and the whole "Earth in despair in front of the incomprehensible overwhelming Alien menace" trope exist at least since Top wo nerae.
they use Heavy metal particles(basically Chaff) which absorb the energy
the problem is that it disrupts commutation as well as radar and other signals.
Alternative was planned to be released the same time as extra, but problems arose and that didn't end up happening
AYNIK is also really short and thus very easy to adapt into a film.
MuvLuv would be a complete bitch to do, because there's so much shit to cut yet so much shit to cover, and would probably be impossible to do in anything less than a trilogy.
Actually in Alternative they used artillery shells filled with a mix and mercure and other chemicales. When they shot the rounds, the Laser Class would blow them up in the sky, creating a large smokescreen wich would prevent them from blowing up the normal artillery shells. See Kagoshima arc.
It stopped working when the BETA eventually figured it out and started to let themselves get blown up by the chemical shells.
So yeah, they did use anti-laser tactics in MLA.
How would you make a series with a playful start, followed by the sensei getting her head bitten off, followed by Groundhog's Day, and then not have it turn into Madoka?
Yuuma looks a little different than I remember him, 4chan.
Gunbuster movie when?
Elle Fanning as Noriko when?
Yukikaze staring Tom Cruise when?
Please no. Gunbuster don't need a live action movie and would be terrible as one.
That said, I feel like UCverse Gundam would be the best candidate. It already had a shitty movie, but a proper one could work easily for Hollywood :
>International cast, so there isn't the problem of having 'murricans playing japanese characters.
>Space nazis vs UN knockoff, so they can fill it with murrican propaganda.
>Destruction porn thanks to colony fights.
>Mechs somehow became fashionable.
>mfw tom perfectly potray guy that crazed from too many time loop because he actually is
>Not liking Tom Cruise goes from beta to alpha to omega, all in a day's work
The form of the mimics and the camera movements kind of ruins the action scenes. Having roller blade power armour was a good idea though.
Here's your Live Action Hollywood adaptation of Gunbuster. And it sucked.
I only know of one polish co-worker that watched. No one else ever heard of it. Maybe it's just because many people just stop going to the movies because only shit airs unless it's some brand thing like Godzilla or Tolkien.
Alternative=fuck you and fuck you're waifu, here BETA
Extra actually ties directly into certain events in Alt and has a bunch of little hints towards Alt throughout.
TACHI AGARE KEDAKAKU MAE, SADAME WO UKETA SENSHI YO
SEN NO KAKUGO MI NI MATOI, KIMI YO OOSHIKU HABATAKE
would match the OVA then.
Let's see a movie based on a book about a young guy in the army in a futuristic setting, or a movie based on a unofficially translated wish fulillment Visual Novel for otakus about a self insert guy with 5 other girls in which you have to play through a bunch of insanely boring shit for 30 hours before you even begin to get to anything decent
