I have never understood Mikoto's popularity.
Her crush is completely one-sided, besides falling in love with Touma she had no development at all and her actual relevance ended in volume 3; after that all she can do is shooting lightnings at things, since her involvement in the magic and keikaku is nonexistent. For the fuck's sake, she even became irrelevant in her own manga.
Even the tsundere personality isn't done right, because instead of going from tsun to dere and staying dere (which would require character development), she just tries to protect Touma or hurt Touma depending on the mood.
I do not really dislike her, she just has nothing to offer as a character. She's still in the story only because of tsunshekels.
I'd like to see some other people supporting Touma more. Mikoto's scenes are repetitive and boring. Thor, Clones, Accel, Shiage, Umidori, Itsuwa, Misaki, Fiamma, Othinus, Leivinia, Kaori, Tatemiya, Gunha, Double Jesus, Kakine, Lessar, Mark Space, Kumokawa sisters, Fukiyose, Aisa and even goddamn Stiyl - they all are much more entertaining than Mikoto and have more interesting relationship with Touma. And most of them could use some more screen time.

Index can show affection for Touma.
Itsuwa can show affection for Touma.
The clones can show affection for Touma.
Even Misaki can SHOW proper and direct affection for Touma despite him not being able to recognize and remember her forever.
Othinus can show affection for Touma, despite all the time she tortured and broke him, and her being a literal god that considered Touma just a simple and insignificant human beyond the IB.
There isn't a single moment where Mikoto has a heartfelt and sincere talk or dialogue with Touma about her own feelings and her opinion of him. No proper dere exists in their interactions.

Well that is how relationships start, but I do agree there are more choices a lot more.
If she hasn't done so in 36 novels, she never will. You know it to be true. She already got plenty of time to do something in NT after all the build-up that started in volume 14 with her realizing his memory loss and volume 16 with the love realization, events that led to her rescue of Touma in WWIII, whose failure led to her motivation of fighting alongside him starting with NT2. but as always, there wasn't a single significant or meaningful development or affection scene that could get her closer to Touma and make her feelings clear for him.
Index is different because she's close and intimate with Touma and her relationship and she's okay with him. The only development their relationship needed was Index realizing the fact Touma was hiding his memory loss from her, which peaked at the climax of volume 22.
Mikoto doesn't have this kind of build up or bond with Touma that would allow her to have an impactful and climatic scene with him, the only thing close to that was her confrontation about his memory loss, which ended with Touma shooing her away and not caring, and of course, her onesided feelings that motivate her to fight alongsinde him are forever ignored by Touma. She has nothing to offer as character for himafter her "big" scene in NT10 which of course, wasn't anything meaningful or memorable and only showed that her only way of displaying affection and care is through senseless violence, so the chances of her ever crossing that line are next to zero
And Othinus, secondary? What the hell? She's more important for the story and Touma's character than Mikoto will ever be.

Nobody will say she has the most interesting or memorable interactions with him. Shipping is directly tied to her interactions with Touma. And those haven't had any support at all, even after their scene in NT10. The reaction for it was more neutral and negative than positive, and it was supposed to be a "big" scene. Maybe the fact that about everything else in that novel was more impressive and enjoyable had something to do with it, I don't know.

Othinus outdid any role, position, status and whatever you want Mikoto had in the story. Mikoto is just a secondary character that has never had any central relevance on the story or Touma's character. Main girl status accounts for that and the mutual and meaningful development the girl gets with the protag and how lasting it is. Othinus has been the most central and important girl for Touma's character since Index, and changed the status quo of the series so she will be living with him and stay as close as Index by his side from here on out. Just like Rikou is with Shiage and LO is with Accel. Mikoto will continue being as important as the other haremettes, which is far from being a main girl. She is only a main girl when it comes to marketing and her own manga. Nothing remotely close if you talk about standing as heroine for Touma.

She's the least interesting, least expanded-upon character who basically serves as nothing but a human punctuation mark on which to end a scene with Touma, usually by biting him.
What little she contributes to an episode usually boils down to her going into autism-mode and google-searching her library of magic books to do something incredibly minor like fuck with someone's spellcasting - something Touma would do were it not for the writers occasionally remembering Index exists and feeling guilty that she's not done anything in a while.
She's nothing but comic relief, and I use the word 'relief' very, very tentatively here.
Actually, acquaintances can do that and other things too. Touma doesn't do things with Mikoto he wouldn't do with anyone else. A routine is just the repetition of that, not a sign of a close and balanced relationship.
Actual banter is cranking out sex jokes, having hostile yet affectionate mutual dialogues with Othinus, or being teased about impregnating middle schoolers in Tokiwadai by Misaki.

Mikoto's chapter wasn't mean to be mostly comedy like Kanzaki's, it was serious after Touma broke the ice with a bit of comedy, and the chapter did well at that. You have no real comparison for comedy.
