The worst part is he didn't have to be that way either. Plenty of other mecha have done the "silent but competent" protagonist much better but I guess none of the AZ writers saw fit to give the main character some much needed backstory. From the first episode all you know about him is he is an autistic highschooler whose sister is in the military and he has presumably received the same amount of training as his classmates. Fast forward a cour and now he's nigh singlehandedly carrying the earth military on his back along with receiving a nifty new bionic eye with still no explanation as to why he's still the only earth solider with a working brain.

I agree, Inaho could have bin one of the best MC in a mecha series ever if they had given him a backstory to why he seemingly has no emotions. Also not making him the best pilot because reasons and everybody else is an idiot. instead they could have made it so that he stand back observes the situation and coming up with plans that involves team work instead of what we got. That is Inaho gets a random power up before every battle that never herd of again e.g. reactive-armor from episode 5 and defeats the bad guy in like 20 seconds.
