A great anime which display maturity and intelligence would be Haibane Renmei for example. I just don't see Tatami Galaxy anywhere in that category; even if /a/ believes so.

I don't think it's trying to be deep; but people interpret everything differently.
For me, the main theme is just about realizing that there's more to life than your 4.5 tatami room essentially that the outside world is worth giving a go even though most of the it'll still be shit.

It does a lot that Tatami Galaxy doesn't, but that's kore because they are both completely different shows though. What Haibane Renmei pulls off though is much much harder than what Tatami Galaxy does. Haibane is something I'd call a masterpiece easily, whereas I can see easily flaws in Tatami Galaxy although it's very good.

I enjoyed tatami galaxy, but I do kind of see where it comes off as kind of a "2deep4u" show. I don't think that was intentional though, most slice o' lyf shows tend to come off that way.

Sigh, I've explained this so many times to plebs but herr we go. What you saw was onky the outer appearance of the show, the complexity of Haibane Renmei is very deep, but it also doesn't make shove it in your face.
Under the calming and melancholic atmosphere lies a tale with heavy themes that you have to think to actually comprehend why this series is so amazing. This is easily shown by how you thought it was an average show, when in fact the delivery of its themes is so subtle and masterfully done that you just couldn't pick up on them.

Secondly. I really loved it because for an 13 episode anime it took the time to start the hole plot progression from episode 6. Spending 5 episodes presenting the characters/environment made them feel so alive/real.
It's quite subtle, the crow scene is a great example. It is often over-looked but it's the probably the most important scene if the anime.
I have a soft spot for humble anime too. It never shoved it's opinion in your face, leaving you to interpret it in your manner.OST is fucking god-tier too.
