Did you watch the whole thing? If you liked the end of it or the whole thing overall and not just specific moments/episodes then you hav epure shittaste. It was like Deadman Wonderland, trying to be at first accurate, but ending up somewhere it shouldn't be.
Never see Ares mentioned on here. Follows some new mercenary recruits in a medieval setting with no magic bullshit. It has a slow start and crap art at the beginning, but gets to be quite good when it hits its stride. Its beginning really sucks as a hook though.

Of coarse I watched the whole thing. I only read the manga because I watched the show and wanted to see more of the story. It has been about 5 years though, like I mentioned, so I'm not going to sit here and pretend I remember it vividly. I remember enjoying it and not being completely pissed off at the adaption when I read it afterwards.

Honestly, the art is pretty terrible and the fights don't really stand out much in comparison to other series in the same genre.
but the fucking character interaction is godly. To start with the fact that the characters range from middle aged detectives to middle school girls and that each of them gets decent exposure on their goals/wishes/personality. I'd honestly watch a slice of life of the characters just because it's fun as fuck watching the general banter whenever they aren't fighting.
It's one of my favorite series just because of this.

Besides that though, very rarely should you let a anime ending decide your opinion of the entire show. If every anime ended with "now go read the manga!" or "read the novel!" I don't think you would be any happier. Another anime with a worse ending than that used to also be highly recommended, Claymore.

Yes I'm caught up to the manga and know it isn't like the anime, because it's actually good. Every goddamn chapter sins two/three years had a important moment or goddman plottwist, the anime could deliver this feeling in anyway.
I never said that the series is shit, I said that the anime wasn't a good adaption. It may be a "good" anime as itself, but not if you compare it to the manga.

I don't feel as strongly towards it. I think I remember it skipping the teaparty or something and some of the character building scenes, but overall it followed the manga. As far as adaptions go it could have been way worse and because of that I do not believe that it is shit.
