Maybe the producers just didn't want to give resources to a series that doesn't pander to their usual otaku demographic. But if that kind of reasoning could fly these days, anime would be dead.

No I'm just saying that on average their shows seem to crater after the first couple of episodes. That might go for the Aniplex brand in general though regardless of studio since they rely so goddamn much on popular licenses, popular people and marketing versus having shows that can even stay interesting and in some cases even consistently as animated as the first couple of episodes. Ever since they started taking on overseeing pretty much every popular adaptation project things have gotten incredibly one note and kind of boring as far as most anime seasons go.

One of the greatest first episodes ever. Godlike animation and an amazing first scene, with those delightfully absurd first lines.
Too bad the anime didn't stay at this level. Still enjoyable but animation-wise it took a dive and it became random as hell.
