Haven't read the novels, but I thought the anime did well portraying Izaya as pitiful by the end of S1. I usually hate edgy faggots like him, but he's very entertaining to watch exactly because he is somewhere in between this dangerous and astute web weaver and an anti-social, self-centered, attention-craving manchild with delusions of grandeur. Namie was also a good foil for him with her no-nonsense attitude, never buying into his bullshit.
And S2 has been a lot more in your face about it, I can't see someone still idealizing him after the hot pot episode.
That said, I still hate him. But it's a good hate.

Vorona is a pro russian assassin, Igor suffered loss since he did not know about Shizuo, but otherwise still could kill him easily if wanted. Slon possibly can fight with Shizuo (same as Simon) hand to hand.
Yakuza are the real big badass guys in Durarara and characters will learn that soon enougth.
Ruri is Celti level monster, and while got punched by Shizuo does not mean she is weak.
