I don't buy this. You haven't read that many romances if you think this is the case at all. MOST romances have at least kissing, dating, and often sex as well. Yaoi is especially sexual, but there is smutty shoujo/josei as well as stuff that is just regular romance and fade-to-black type sex like Ookami Shoujo, ParaKiss, Fushigi Yuugi etc.
