It's really hard to write a story with a happy couple and have absolutely nothing happen to them.
But discounting that Asuna is a pretty shitty character without any goals of her own. Her MR arc boiled down to "I want to keep being a second rate shit and do whatever my boyfriend wants".
There are indeed people who are proud of acting as support and never being the star. But unless they're REALLY well written they make poor main characters.
