Not really, it just requires you to know the names of the factions, characters, vehicles and concepts.
That's about it.
It's not a smart or even complicated show by any stretch of the imagination, just a self-important one, that asks you to get invested in things it didn't bother to properly introduce in the first place.
Nothing has ever happened that wasn't completely self-evident.
Non of the characters have any depth.
And non of the situations or concepts presented are thought provoking or innovative (Apart from the retarded beam shower curtain. That was new, because of how stupid it was.)
There's an okay concept for a story at the core, but Tomino is an amateurish storyteller without any style or energy.
However it is very well made and good in all aspects except for the writing department.
