It's meant to be cheesy and hamfisted, it's style is supposed to reflect how Chinese cultural folklore was portrayed and passed on. Even the art has a distinct brush stroke style to it giving it an authentic impression.
The subtlety is mostly saved for the twists and tactics. I doubt anyone figured out the identity of the traitor/trumpcard in Guandu, let alone how they managed to pull off the fire attack at Red Cliffe.

Merc has never forsaken us. He's completely caught up with the raws in translations. Ki Shodar was the one who had to retire getting all burned out re-drawing at a god tier level on a daily basis for over a year.
Yudy is acceptable, but he's not as skilled nor is his grasp of English for proofreading as good. Then you add in that we caught up with the raws at one point and we're using shitty magazine scans instead of tanks it's all downhill.
