The problem is anime n Japan had a golden age in the VHS/DVD era with plenty of OVAs and series that due to VHS/DVD sales turned a profit so they could be more adventurous but since the BluRays are shit in sales the market simply is too small and they play it safe, doesnt help that most risky attempts end up by being commercial failures a lot because people behind it simply had far more ego that talent.
