moot didn't get it. He also wrong about a lot of things. He claimed to be out of touch but he clearly was based on most of the things he said.
What happened with moot was that he took so much criticism and dealt with so much board politics over the years that it took it's toll on him. It got so repetitive that he ends up thinking every problem that emerges is similar to one in the past, and replies with a canned response. He thinks every time people complain about moderation it's a witch hunt over one mod. He also stopped caring about a lot of things including serious discussion, just as a defense mechanism to avoid going crazy. Half of the questions in the Q&A were misinterpreted and misanswered, like the person that complained about a mod deleting things he doesn't like and provided proof, but moot responded by saying that they're users just like us and also admitting that he doesn't keep track of what his mods do all the time.

/a/ is the beating heart of 4chan, it makes sense it would feel its creator being torn from it the most. It was always the center of this site, it was the true successor to random/anime, and thus the first board. I always saw /a/ as just as special within 4chan as 4chan is within the internet. No matter what we said about each other, moot loved us, and I think most of us loved him.

The way I see it, he did a ton of shit wrong and was also wrong on a lot of issues, sometimes he was even incompetent, or apathetic about things the site cared for.
But it could have been way, way worse. He was at least a sensible guy who tried to preserve the nature of 4chan, and didn't sell out or abandon us for a long time, which is a lot more than most site admins do.
