Just know this: episodes 25 and 26 were cobbled together after the budget ran dry and try to act like it's a happy resolution even though nothing is answered or resolved.
End of Evangelion is closer to the ending they had planned, but is laced with angry retribution against the fans. Doesnt' really resolve matters, but at least gives a climactic finale.
Eva is my favorite series. Its definitely worth watching at least once. Just start with episode 1.

Personally, I didn't like it. I never understood why I should care about Shinji, a kid with daddy problems with no redeeming qualities; and Asuka, a complete bitch.

Have to say though, their problems are self-inflicted, as are Misato's. They are the most telling characters in this dysfunctional gathering, however much I hate Asuka. Rei however is in a situation she can't help. It feels like she is mostly there to toy with the audience's sympathy. She is rather out of place here. I honestly think Haruhi did her better.

I liked the rebuilds up until the third one happened and shat all over itself. The point of Eva is the characters, I know, but I've always liked the worldbuilding in it.
1.1 was just the first few episodes redone with a few differences and more budget. Then I watched 2.2 and I was amazed, it seemed like he'd blown an entire movie trolling me into thinking that it was just going to be a straight remake and then it went off the rails and I couldn't wait to see where they were going with it.
Walkman thingy goes to 27? Beast mode eva? New character (obviously well thought out with a well planned arc I thought), more Rei development? Amazing!
Then the third movie came out, and it turned out that the second movie wasn't carefully planned setup for anything at all and I got to watch an entire movie of the franchise shitting all over itself. Everyone's older because why (have there not been any angel attacks in ten years?) except for the pilots for no good reason, fucking KITTY PAW EVA, everyone's back to the make Shinji hate himself game despite having him encouraged him to do the exact thing they now hate him for last movie.
The first movie lulling me into a false sense of security and the second movie sucker punching me and then setting up all these fascinating unanswered questions seemed amazing. Then the third movie happens, and it turns out that whoever directed the whole thing caught M. Night Shyamamalama syndrome.
Pic related, it's a show that had so much fun doing what it did that nobody even noticed when it never delivered on the stuff it set up and wrecked its own mythology.

NGE had an interesting premise and interesting characters, but I never understood why /a/ jizzes all over it all the time. It was pretty lackluster in the end, and seemed like it was trying way too hard to be deep.
It did it better than loads of other series, that's for sure. But it still isn't the godsend that everyone claims it is. It was honestly a very forgettable series, and the only reason I remember it at all is because of the daily threads that I see about it in this shit hole every day.
OP should watch it just because it's a "staple" of the anime industry, but that's about it. Don't expect anything amazing, there are loads of better series
