I don't think anyone ever really taped the tournaments originally so it was never seen worldwide until after Cell tournaments. He was also one of the only few who ever got to talk to them personally. Not a lot of people would have recognized the Z-fighters unless they personally went to the tournaments when they were young.

I loved how the Announcer just brushed off Krillin being alive after he saw him get killed by Tambourine with his own eyes 3 years before.
He was a little freaked at first, but all Krillin told him was that he got better and the Announcer just let it go.
