That's where I disagree entirely; there's an entire academia around literature, completely unfounded in the media of anime. I'm someone who notices a direct correlation, however, that the more anime one watches, the more they recognize that Evangelion isn't that great, at least, not deserving of the iconic emblem of what Japanese animation is.
Not to mention, if we're talking about merits of the genre, Evangelion is by no means the first mecha anime to deconstruct or subvert typical mecha tropes; the only remarkable thing it did was to subvert otaku's fantasies.

To put it more into terms that you might understand, here's an analogy; not comparing mediums but to understand the strange phenomenon of how people react to a work: someone who doesn't watch a lot of films boldly claiming that Quentin Tarantino's Pulp Fiction is one of the greatist films.
This is what Evangelion is in the animation medium. They do not know what they're saying. You're focused on the fact that I compared it to highschool, instead of the reality that there is a crafted opinion and there is a novice opinion. Evangelion is great for those who are relatively new to the field of anime because it's more of a popular icon than anything. Gunbuster wasn't originally conceived or written by Anno. The story was first conceived by Okada, Yamaga wrote the screenplay, then Anno threw it out and in the end the storyboards were drawn without a screenplay. It was a huge mess and this kind of shit is why you can't judge anime as a single person's creative vision.

But It's also another way to call a movie, for example a summer blockbuster or a cash-grab movie it's a flick(the amazing spider-man 2), a normal criminal thriller it's a movie(Prisoners), a film it's a little higher(The deer hunter) and cinema (the sacrifice).
