I thought that the way the episode was paced and leaving the actual battle for the next episode were great decisions, most shows try to cram too much action into the first episode, by spacing out the events and allowing it to end on an unresolved cliffhanger there was more room in the episode to establish a quality and level of character establishment and development that was unprecedented for the first 22 minutes of a show.

The characterization is fantastic. It takes the time to introduce you to a few of the characters, we see the two girls form a friendship with each other, they get to know each other as we get to know them. They are immediately likeable and you connect with them. Not to mention it has a competent director, each scene was perfectly executed and the atmosphere is relaxing.
I'm not an idolfag either, I disliked the first series but this was great.
