Why doesn't Togashi work on this series more? My mistake. If I had to guess on why he got visitors, most of the people from the hunter exam didn't actually witness how much of a psycho he is, he was just some kid that was too young to be a hunter anyway and did something extraordinary + made a sacrifice, but they didn't get the whole story, just that he basically forfeited his own life to take out an enemy strong enough to kill every single one of them.
I always find it funny how everyone's opinion of Gon changes over the course of the series. Most people like him at first and hate leorio, and then end up swapping by by the end.
The problem is that Togashi has written himself a typical goofy moralfag shonen MC, but placed him into a world full of darkness and grey morality and then expecting him to be able to smile his way through everything.

That said, there are probably people whose abilities we don't really know about that are stronger. Beyond Netero is probably absurdly strong seeing how he survived the Dark Continent. Ging's might is probably also stupidly strong, but probably in a more years of experience and expertly using his powers sorta way as opposed to using punches as strong as nukes.
