Just finished this today, /a/

That post series depression is setting in. Let's talk about Hyōka.
>>
It was a mediocre series centered around the drama of the characters and growing up while in high school, except nothing really changed about any of the characters except for Oreki investigating something of his own free will once.
>>
>>119682547
So it was realistic
>>
The animation quality was fucking good.
>>
this series is so goozzzzzzzzzz
>>
>>119682362
well animated melodrama
>>
I'm not a SoL person but this was great, 8/10.
>>
>>119682691
Not quite. What kind of public high schoolers constantly talk about their life philosophies?
>>
>>119682965
Uh. Lots. It's the time to pretend to be mature and deep.
>>
>>119682965
uh. young adults in high school are obsessed with themselves. it's no surprise that they'd spend a lot of time thinking or discussing the way they see the world, and not a stretch that a fictional take on highschoolers would portray them that way

Why did she have to be a side character, I've said it numerous times but Kyoani will never top Hyouka at all.

It ticks nearly every box.
>>
>>119683116
Not as much as the Hyouka BDs.
>>
Often understated (for an anime), contemplative (for an anime) and beautiful to look at.
Sometimes heavy-handed with the melodrama.
Brilliantly handled subtexts; neither excessively lampshaded or obscured.
Needs a movie way more than Tamako Market deserved one.

>>119682965
Did you go to school? Did you have an adolescence?
>>
>>119683190
Didn't encounter that shit while I was in school, I was always more on the sports side of things though.
>>
>>119682965
Plenty, at least at the high school I went to.
>>
>>119683245
I didn't think we'd get those types on /a/.
>>
>>119683245

>on /a/

Someone wake me up
>>
Not a huge fan of Kyoani but I loved it. The production values were great and I enjoyed how they applied the conventions of mystery fiction to solving silly highschool drama. The seriousness with which the characters treated all these little mysteries had this really sweet charm. Felt really nostalgic.

It didn't take long for this thread to go to shit apparently.

>I didn't encounter that shit while I was in school

I didn't experience students discussing their life philosophies therefore that sort of behavior must have never existed.

>>119683286
Are you fucking serious?

Fuck this thread and the morons in it.

Which arc did you like best?

But for laptops it's a bit more expensive to have that kind of angle, isn't it?

Festival > movie > hyoka
I should rewatch it again though.

Why was the romance not properly wrapped up?
Why even hit at it at all if there isn't going to be any closure?
Why is Satoshi suffering?
>>
>>119683667
When DEEN gets to do it.
>>
>>119684005
>Why was the romance not properly wrapped up?
Because writing satisfying conclusions is too difficult for japs.

>Why even hit at it at all if there isn't going to be any closure?
Because it gives the show more appeal.

>Why is Satoshi suffering?
Because he's an indecisive, melodramatic cunt that's scared of any real change in his current school life.
>>
So what was the lesson of this show? Talent beats everything so it's better to ditch your ambitious and hobby? Because that's what I got from it. Oreiki doesn't go for chitanda due to the massive amount of responsibility she has in that hick town, Satoshi hates himself has a self defeatist attitude and as such does not seek a releationship with maya and Maya gives up her dream of being an artist or manga writer because she will never ever reach her seniors level of talent. Fuck life.
>>
>>119684005
>Why was the romance not properly wrapped up?
Because the novel it's adapted from is still ongoing
>Why even hit at it at all if there isn't going to be any closure?
KyoAni gave it as much closure as they could without an anime original ending where they kissu and fug with benis in vagina.
>Why is Satoshi suffering?
muh indecisiveness
>>
>>119683430
It's your own fault. Remember, autism, it's real.
>>
>>119683148
Kyoani topped Hyouka at least three times
>>
>>119684005

>>
>Oreki completely renounces his life philosophy for Chitanda's sake
>not an enormously meaningful development in their romance

I think some people on /a/ are genuinely have autism.
>>
>>119684178
I think they were trying to make a point about being realistic with your ambitions by realizing your limitations, but I'll admit that they were a bit ham-fisted with the execution of that plotline.

Still a great series, though. I kind of wish that Oreki and Chitanda were the only main characters, but there were some fun moments with Maya and Satoshi.

Not sure I would sit through more of it, though, because if we're being perfectly honest it was very slow.
>>
>>119682965
That's what I was thinking watching Hyouka, their "high school" is more like a college, it has a hundred different clubs and all of the kids are intelligent and mature well beyond their age. If all Japanese high schools are like that, I can understand why they're so nostalgic and make 20 high school anime every season
>>
>>119684178
Oreki seriously considered staying there with Chitanda, and his development over the course of the series made him realize that he enjoys solving mysteries with his friends, and there's no greater source of mysteries than her (not to mention all of the emotional development they got together). A door was opened at the end, whereas there wasn't even one to begin with in episode one. The little scene with Satoshi and Mayaka some time after the Valentine's episode shows that he's starting to change for the better as well. I don't exactly remember if there was more development with Mayaka and drawing, but there's more than one way to be involved in manga than simply being an artist.
>>
>>119686141
The series would have been better if his angst with regards to Maya had stemmed from his closet homosexuality. That would have been interesting.

But no, apparently he wanted to be a high school detective or some shit, and he was butthurt that Oreki was a better high school detective than he was. Fucking stupid.
>>
>>119686574
Having tons of clubs is a Japanese thing where it's generally looked down upon to not be in a club. Also, rewatch the movie theory-crafting episode or the festival episode when Satoshi was competing with that tryhard if you think they're all smart.
>>
>>119686617
>But no, apparently he wanted to be a high school detective or some shit, and he was butthurt that Oreki was a better high school detective than he was. Fucking stupid.
That's what killed the development for me. I can't really get into it if ths character is getting mad and anxious for stupid things.
>>
Hyouka and Jinrui were AOTY that year I think.
>>
>>119686770
I loved Hyouka but Jinrui was a masterpiece. It kills me that there isn't any more of Watashi and her shitty world that may or may not be the byproduct of Fairy bullshit.
>>
One of those shows I liked in more retrospect than while I was watching it. I wish they had gone into Satoshi's character development sooner, for the majority of the show he was an enigma hard to give a shit about.
>>
>>119682965
Look at Jaden Smith. You may not believe it but there are millions of teens in high school just like him. It's just easier to see thanks to social media.

We all agree that Satoshi was the best character right?
>>
>>119694608
No.
>>
>>119694608
He was best suffering.
>>
>>119694608
Yeah, he was the best written character, I think for the most part people just found his voice annoying and that made the character a faggot for them.

>>119686617
He was specifically shown to be a mystery fan multiple times during the series, a teenager in his position would probably be filled with dreams of being a highschool detective, and then their hopes would be crushed when they realized how unlikely and stupid that would be. Only problem was that in his case, he had his lazy friend living out his dream effortlessly and continuously, I don't blame him for being jelly.
>>
>>119694608
I thought he was cool but he turned out to be a dick.
>>
>>119696078
Not a dick, just a very insecure person
>>
>>119696078
>thought he was cool

Satoshi was never meant to be 'cool' or thought of as such. He was very insecure from the beginning of the series.

>>
>>119683190

Maybe for high schoolers.
>>
>>119694608
He was the only interesting one. Chitanda was a moeblob whose only purpose in the story was locked to Oreki so she had no real independent traits of her own (or at least complex traits that is), Mayaka was okay but she never got much characterization or depth, and Oreki was an extremely typical MC just with slightly better character development than normal. Satoshi was the only character I hadn't seen already seen in other anime bunch of times.
>>
>>119682362
Started it a few days ago, just past half way now. I'm enjoying it for the most part. The characters are likeable, and the art and animation and about the best you could ever hope for out of a tv anime. The only problem I've had with it so far was with episode 11. I liked that it showed that it actually can take the whole crew to solve the mysteries rather than it just being the Oreki show, and how he got caught up in his own hype and couldn't see the forest for the trees. What I didn't like was how everyone fucking bitched him out for it afterwards. I get being disappointed and discussing their concerns about it, but it was like these faggots were legit mad at him for not solving it. Like god damn, how DARE he get something wrong while the rest of you were too busy with your super important tasks of sorting books, having to take a make up test for idiots, or being fucking hungover.
