Okay, so Touma got complete amnesia early on in the series. Later, it was explained that before the series started Touma got partial amnesia and lost the ability to remember anything about one particular person.

Now, we all know things come in sets of three.

>he just needs more Mikoto in his life
Under the table THK’s feet made convulsive movements. He had not stirred from his seat, but in his mind he was running, swiftly running, he was with the crowds outside, cheering himself deaf. He looked up again at the portrait of Mikoto. The colossus that bestrode the world! The rock against which the hordes of Academy City dashed themselves in vain! He thought how ten minutes ago — yes, only ten minutes — there had still been equivocation in his heart as he wondered whether the news from the front would be of victory or defeat. Ah, it was more than a enemy ship that had sunk! Much had changed in him since that first day in the Ministry of Love, but the final, indispensable, healing change had never happened, until this moment.

It was all right. Everything was all right. The struggle was finished. He had won the victory over himself. He loved Mikoto.

I was thinking about rating these and I realized that what I probably wanted to do for everyone's chapter was rate prelude, battle, and denouement separately.

For example, I think Marian, Mikoto, and Index get satisfying conclusions to their chapters (YMMV on Mikoto), whereas Thor's kind of sucks. That's not enough to save/sink their chapters, though.

Of course, the fights that excel do all three well.

>those fights were almost equally disappointing.
I wouldn't say I was Agnese's fight was disappointing per se, but only because my expectations for her were pretty low (I mean, honestly, what can she do?)

Index and Birdway, on the other hand... well, whatever. The battle was pretty much an afterthought anyway.
>>
>>119514492
That's because Thor and Touma will hang out beating people together. r-right?
>>
>>119514492
Index and Birdway's chapter is literally a joke. As in, not so-bad-it's-a-joke, but an actual, supposed-to-be-funny comedy interlude. So it can be hardly be judged the same way you'd judge the fight with Silvia.

The only real substance to that chapter is that Birdway and Index have been / will throw their substantial magical ability behind making sure Touma can continue his quest. Everything else in that chapter - the whole thing - was just a typical series tsukkomi ramped up to high heaven.
>>
Do you think that Mikoto will act any differently in her next appearance considering she finally "beat" Touma? She said it felt empty, maybe that means she'll act a little more mellow?
>>
>>119514492
I think the prelude for Mikoto's battle was good, but the rest was terrible.

Index and Birdway's chapter only did the comedic aspect better than Mikoto's, but the rest was just as bad.

Agreed with Agnese.

Overall I still think that they were the lowest points of the novel.

Birdway came off as a huge disappointment in NT10, but that's because we have been used to see her as someone important and powerful, level-headed and influential, has carried the story for several novels, and you can always expect her to have effect on the characters around her. So seeing her being reduced to a jealous girl that loses her shit for Touma's stupidity was jarring.

I wouldn't say Mikoto is a disappointment anymore in the novels. With the half-assed way Kamachi has been implementing her in the story in recent times, expecting her to have a well-written and climatic moment and a solid role in the novels would be the surprise.
>>
>>119515381
the harem ruins girls, it fucks with there personality also for some reason jealous tsun seems to be what kamachi thinks all of the girls should act like with touma. only itsuwa is free from that but she hasn't really seen touma with other women.

You're talking as if some people didn't enjoy this scene a lot. I'm well aware that plenty of people disliked it but I thought it was well done. Made me smile.
>>
>>119515763
I even tried to like it after a re-read, but the flaws are plentiful and I can't turn a blind eye to them.
Starting with Touma's attitude and sudden change of mood as he was about to hand Mikoto's ass to her, and Mikoto talking out of her ass and lecturing Touma about things she wasn't exactly believing from him just a moment before. All while beating a boy that wasn't trying to defend himself. The pacing didn't help because everything was fucking rushed and the behaviour of the characters with the sudden mood shifts was not believeable at all.

It wasn't well done in any way.
>>
>>119515381
Being the guy who has Birdway in his top 3, I was a bit disappointed in Birdway's fight, but I enjoyed it nonetheless. Birdway's awesome skills and power proved itself again when she was able to make Gungnir usable to a human...with the help of Index of course, but still. Birdway wasn't taking the fight seriously, if she was then Touma would be dead in the ground. She was just testing him and helped him after she and he came to an understanding.

For Mikoto's fight, I wasn't disappointed like some were. I rather enjoyed the raw, gritty, and emotional fight and clashed of ideals the two went through. The battle echoed the situation they once had in Index volume 3, with the difference being the roles were reversed. I like the way Kamachi made use of that.
>>
>>119515622
>>119515763
Some people may have liked it, but it was a minority.

This is true when you remember the hype and excitement for that scene when the spoiler pics were revealed, already expected to be one of the highlights of the book. It turned out to not live up to the hype and it was merely "ok" at best for the people who liked it. Pretty much every scene with Othinus, Thor and Accel had a more positive and grand reception.
>>
>>119515987
>sudden change of mood
Touma broke the ice with comical teasing, but then it got serious so he got serious too. It wasn't abrupt.

>Starting with Touma's attitude and sudden change of mood as he was about to hand Mikoto's ass to her
No, what was actually weird was Touma's weirdly chipper attitude throughout the novel up until then. There's been a continuous theme of Touma having lost his confidence throughout all of New Testament, the high point of which was Will kicking his ass in NT 9, but Thor and Mikoto had to get him to suck it up in NTs 5 and 3 as well.

Will dumped a bucket of cold water on his head and got him to pick up and start moving forward again, but I'm supposed to act surprised when it turns out that he still felt bad about wiping out millions of smiling faces after all? He killed Agnese's parents all over again, that's not the thing you can just shrug off... well, you can, but it's not weird when you can't.

>Mikoto talking out of her ass
She understood enough to back what she said.
>>
>Dem arguments and claims that THK always say
>>
>>119516336
>It wasn't abrupt.
Him breaking down and feeling guilty over the omega world, out of fucking nowhere.

>What are the hell are you talking about?
Mikoto wasn't understanding anything about theshit Touma was telling to her, and even tried to ignore it. But when it is time for her to be in the right in order to moralfag Touma she suddenly talks as if she is an expert on the matter and lectures him about shit she has no idea about, shit that she had half-assedly heard from Touma and isn't able to grasp the magnitude of it, and wasn't even trying to believe it in the first place.
Contrived writing at its finest.

“And during that time… Oh, dammit. I thought I’d gotten over this, but I just can’t make up my mind. At any rate, a lot happened. So very much happened. …For example, would you believe this? I saw all 20,000 Sisters alive and attending a festival together. You didn’t have to suffer at all and all of you were smiling together as friends. That era really happened. And this wasn’t an illusion or suggestion and it wasn’t a parallel world or dream. This world truly did have that happy era!!”

Mikoto only looked dubious.

It was not that she was forgiving him. It did not feel real to her. That was why she did not get angry. It was horribly unfair of him to assume that meant she had accepted his actions.

So…

“I destroyed all those people’s happiness to come back here. It wasn’t just you. To come back here, I rejected a world where all 6 billion people were perfectly saved!”

“I don’t have the slightest clue what you’re talking about.”

“The very fact that you don’t shows that I’ve trampled on your dignity!!”

Mikoto had tried to let it slide with a vague smile, so he shouted out to grab her attention and spoke clearly.

“I’ll try to understand. I’ll work to understand what exactly you gained and what you lost!! But I need Othinus for that. No, if you learn the truth and remember that happy era, you might stop hating Othinus. And then you could easily turn that hatred toward me. You may not understand, but you shouldn’t make up your mind and forgive me until you do!!”

“You…?”
>>
>>119516722
Why are Mikotofags so touchy and take everything so personal?

I could say the same things about other characters and fans wouldn't get their panties in a bunch like you do.
>>
>>119516789
“Of course, I don’t want to destroy myself anymore. I know all too well that I’m not some chosen hero. If…If it’s at all possible that we can all live happily together in this world, then I want to. But that’s exactly why I have to settle everything and pay for all my sins. And her testimony is needed for that! I can’t avoid the issue by letting her die here and be hidden from public view!! I can’t return to a peaceful city after that!! I have so much I have to pay for!! I may even have done more than Othinus!!”

Naturally, Misaka Mikoto did not understand the true feelings behind Kamijou Touma’s cries.

Without sharing the same time as him, that was unavoidable.

“There was a world where all 20,000 Sisters were saved and everyone could smile without grief?”

Mikoto had a certain thought as she grasped a fragment of what had spilled from Kamijou’s mouth.

“After everything, why would you cling to a convenient and terribly naïve world like that!!!?”

Part 3

If all six billion people could smile, that would certainly be best for the world.

No option could be better and that should be prioritized above all else.

Ultimately, Kamijou had overcome that “ultimate argument” with his personal hopes and desires, but he had yet to bring himself to directly defeat that “ultimate argument”.

If he had to choose right or wrong, the answer Othinus had shown him was definitely “right”.

He had wanted to reject that answer even if it meant bearing the sin of being “wrong”.

That had been the truth.

Or it should have been.

“Do you really think that’s the same thing as saving people?”

Misaka Mikoto walked straight toward him through the snow.

A different sort of anger was clearly visible in her eyes.

“There’s no set definition of happiness. As soon as you unify everything under a single set of values, the next round of misfortune and discrimination has already begun.”

An explosive noise burst out as Misaka Mikoto’s fist struck Kamijou Touma at close range.

Bluish-white sparks flew from her arm as she spoke.

“I don’t know what happened to you. I can’t even imagine it. You’ve probably seen a deeper part of the world than I have while staying in Academy City.”

Her legs moved and he jumped back, fearing having his legs swept out from under him.

“But that doesn’t mean you’re right 100% of the time. No one has to accept what you say.”

He could not relax just by gaining some distance between them, so he immediately crouched down and thrust his fist toward the pure-white snow.

Bluish-white sparks burst from her feet in every direction and Imagine Breaker just barely negated the high-voltage current even more intense than a train track’s overhead wires.

“Even if a big bang happened right this instant, the world and universe were remade from scratch, people lived there with no crimes, sins, or mistakes whatsoever, and someone named Misaka Mikoto ignorantly smiled there…!!”

Centered on her clenched fist, a tremendous amount of sparks burst from her entire body.

“That doesn’t change the fact that I took more than 10,000 lives in the past! Even if everything and everyone is saved a second from now and all the documents are rewritten, I don’t want to run from my sins!!”

For an instant – just an instant – Kamijou Touma’s thoughts came to a stop.

And that was when the second wave arrived.

A high-voltage current expanded along the surface of the snowscape and attacked his feet that were buried in the snow.

“Gah!?”

“There’s no such thing as a perfect world.”

He felt a pressure around his heart and his footing grew unsteady, but Mikoto grabbed his collar to support him when he started to fall.
>>
>>119516930
“Even if it looks perfect on the surface, you’ll find something twisted if you look at it differently. It was the same with the #1’s experiment. You wouldn’t accept it when I said my way would make everyone happy! If you understood it back then, why did you change your mind now!?”

After a sound like a swinging metal baseball bat, her forehead slammed into his.

(Not good.)

But it was too late.

A lightning spear of a billion volts produced a tremendous noise as it stabbed into Kamijou’s head from point blank range.

“Vwah!? Agwah!!”

As he lay in the snow, his limbs trembled and he could not get up properly. His heart, brain, and nerves all cried out in pain.

“Those six billion people were swallowed up!! That was a world where a single set of values was forced on them all and they were only allowed to smile!! Anyone who doesn’t smile is treated like they don’t belong!! If you see something like that, you aren’t supposed to sit there looking jealous!! No matter how painful and hard it is and even if you’re all alone, isn’t it your role to clench your fist and say it’s wrong!?”

Misaka Mikoto did not hold back.

She climbed on top of the collapsed boy’s stomach, grabbed his collar with both hands, violently shook his head, and shouted at close range.

“You came back to this world? You sacrificed everyone else to do so? If so, you aren’t supposed to envy what you turned your back on!! You’re supposed to be glad you returned to this world! Even if it’s imperfect and incomplete, you should be glad you were born into this world!! You should be proud of that fact!!”

As if twisting his neck, he desperately looked up at her face.
>>
>>119516974
“Of course…I’m going to change my mind,” he spat out. “You were smiling. You may not remember, but in that golden world, you were truly happy and smiling!! When I see that, I’ll attack my previous thoughts and admit I was wrong!! I’m not some stuffed animal on a conveyer belt!! If I know continuing on will drop me off a cliff, I’ll readily change my beliefs or ideals!!”

A great sound burst out as Misaka Mikoto swung down her fist.

Something split within his mouth, his cheek felt oddly hot, his right eyelid was swollen, but he continued shouting and ignored the fist as it swung down again and again.

“I’m just a high school student! I’m not the 47 Ronin from the Chushingura!! I’ll change what I say any number of times based on what I think is best at the time!! Even if I said something different three days ago and even if I’m saying the exact opposite, it’s still a win as long as someone is smiling in the very end!!”

Hearing that, Mikoto gave a thin smile and stopped her fist.

“Oh, so you do understand.”

“…?”

“There’s no reason to fall off the cliff while bound by meaningless principles and ideologies. If you’re reaching for the happiness you alone believe in, it’s fine to choose the best arguments for the situation. It doesn’t matter if you have to spit on your own words, as long as it all works out in the end.”

Mikoto looked Kamijou Touma directly in the eye.

“So there’s nothing saying you have to bear the weight of my future or the fate of six billion people to the point of your own destruction.”

She spoke and smiled while sitting on top of him in the snow.

She reached her arms around to his back in a gentle embrace.

And a moment later, a tremendous high-voltage current burst from her body and his consciousness was finally blown away.

Just before everything fell to darkness, he thought he heard her speak.

“This is the first time I’ve beaten you… It’s a lot emptier than I thought it would be.”

"I speak for all of /a/ when I say that Mikoto is shit." - Fuck off. This conversation is over.

Part 4

The world flickered before Kamijou’s eyes.

He grimaced as a pain stabbed from the back of his eyes and directly to his brain and his mind quickly came into focus. He was still lying in the snow, but he could not feel the cold. Only after coughing and somehow managing to sit up did he realize Misaka Mikoto was quietly sitting right next to him.

“Are you awake now?”

“Yeah,” he groaned.

In that infinite hell, the Will of the Sisters had saved him by saying he could pursue his own selfishness over the ideal of saving the world.

And now he had been taught that humans were not so simple that saving the world and recreating it into a convenient form was enough to make everyone unconditionally happy.

He began to wonder what he had been doing all this time and he slowly stood up amid the snow.

“Sorry, Misaka. I’ll be going.”

“Because you have to?”

“No.” He wiped the snow off of his back and hips. “Because I want to.”

Hearing that, Mikoto gave a small shrug and showed a different smile from before.

“Then how about you get going?”

“What, you aren’t going to stop me?”

“I can’t. I may have easily beaten you ten minutes ago, but I doubt I could beat you now no matter what I did.”

He turned his back on Mikoto and walked off into that white world once more.

He did not turn around, but he waved a hand in parting. She watched him leave for a while but finally let out a white sigh.

There was a simple reason why she had not said she was going with him.

“Now, then.”

She stood up and walked in the opposite direction of him.

She heard a grinding noise. She had used Academy City’s Level 5 #3's ability to hack in from the outside, but all the Five Overs were gradually breaking free of those electronic chains.

This was a modern battle.

The girl gave a ferocious smile while facing the weapons sent to reliably destroy a certain boy.

“I think it’s about time to do my part.”

>She understood enough to back what she said.
And her speech wasn't convincing. It didn't have that "punch" to it that would leave an impression like Kamachi intended to do. It was pretty underwhelming mostly due to the fact that there wasn't a proper build up to it and the delivering was unremarkeable.

It would have been different if she truly knew about Touma's suffering and the time he spent fighting with Othinus. That would have made her speech more personal, down-to-earth and less shallow.

Touma: I destroyed "Misaka Mikoto's happiness. If you understood, you would hate me.
Misaka: Even if Othinus did something to make a world where a "Misaka Mikoto" lived carefree and innocent, I don't want that. I'm proud of who I am.
Touma: You didn't see what I did. In that world, you really were happy. I'm the worst.
Misaka: Stop being so hard on yourself. I'm here now, and so are you.

Nothing about this conversation requires that Misaka understand infinity hells to have it.
>>
>>119517121
I thought that the speech was very well written. Mikoto was very emotional about it, and Touma had an emotional reaction to it. I also thought that Mikoto smiling and letting Touma go off and do what he needed to do was nice, as well as her staying back to keep the Five Overs from interfering.

She's still a bitch for punching and shocking him unconscious.

That was absolutely unnecessary and shows the terrible double standards behind Mikoto's character writing.

So Touma is not allowed to even lay a finger on her, but she can beat the shit out of him all she wants and get away with it. Everything works out for her. She never has to face consequences for her actions. She is the little miss perfect who is allowed to do what she wants and go to the most dangerous battlefields fighting against people who would shred her to pieces without even trying, and she somehow manages not only to survive and not lose the fight, but to come out unscathed and without a single scratch, when pretty much every other character is sent to the hospital and/or suffers some permanent damage.

I still facepalm at the Brunhild fight and how she was able to dodge Brunhild's first attack, before she started taking advantage of the huge metal sword and the iron sand. The battle should have been over there, but since it is Mikoto and we can't have her get hurt, the plot armor has to amp up to retarded levels.

They make my chest hurt, you don't have to be a Mikoto fan to recognize the cuteness. This is my favorite one though, because while it's super cute the author at least had Mikoto admit that Touma didn't care about her romantically.
>>119519050
LPSaD pretty much gave Fiamma the same power as the Archangel Michael, who was said to be equal to god.
>>119519063
I don't think Touma ever really wanted to hit her. She was the one doing what he normally does, nothing less, nothing more. Touma didn't seem to mind. Also, with Brunhild, she's a level 5, she's pretty damn strong, her radar is overpowered as fuck.
>>
>>119519063

Touma is allowed to do whatever he likes. He didn't feel like punching out Misaka, so he didn't do that. He's allowed to do that too.

Tsuchimikado attacked him. He responded in self-defense. What did you want him to do, pull the same NT 3 "I won't fight back" stunt?

Mikoto attacks in him in NT 10, sure, but she only attacks him because he had temporarily become a spineless fish who needed a bucket of water dumped on his head. In a state like that it makes sense that he wouldn't be fighting back.

The reason Tsuchi got his ass kicked was because his mind was at his limit, not his body. not him but the sand came later

On the road at the top level of the multilevel overpass that had an unnatural absence of cars, Misaka Mikoto and Brunhild Eiktobel faced each other.
This too may have been a historic moment.
On one side was Misaka Mikoto the Railgun, one of the top ranked espers created by the science side.
On the other side was Brunhild Eiktobel who possessed the innate characteristics of a Saint that were exceedingly rare even on the magic side.
They were about to clash.
For a battle that was brought about by coincidence, it threatened to have great effects to both the magic side and science side.
However, the battle was overwhelmingly one-sided.
Academy City espers may have possessed quite a bit of power, but Brunhild Eiktobel possessed the rare qualities of a Christian Saint. And on top of that, she also possessed the rare qualities of a Norse Valkyrie. The two abilities worked against each other and the upper limit of her power changed over a set period like the waxing and waning of the moon. However, she did not currently appear to be having any problems related to that.
And there was a problem that came before trivial differences in power.
Brunhild Eiktobel could reach a top speed that exceeded the speed of sound.
And she brought out that top speed from the very first step.
By the time the explosive noise rang out, it was already too late.
From the perspective of one’s bodily senses, Brunhild seemed to just disappear. And since she was moving faster than sound, one could never react in time based on sound.
Brunhild Eiktobel charged up to a point right in front of Mikoto and vigorously swung up the claymore hanging down from one hand.
She also twisted her wrist to lay the giant sword down flat as she swung it.

No. While Mikoto may be able to react to supersonic speeds, her body is still human and can't keep up with that. She can do absolutely nothing about Brunhild punching her face in at supersonic speed, or using magic on her. The whole fight was just a plot armor fest for Mikoto.
>>
>>119520822
Let's look at this objectively.

Touma got up from:
Being blasted from a flying fortress that calculated just the right amount for destroying an human body.

Beatdown from Carissa, both physically and magically (when she used the dimensional wreckage)

Beatdown from Accelerator and Touma's body wasn't even functioning correctly.

Only gimped by a magic that should've given him organ failure.

Tanked the shockwave from a dust explosion.

Tanked a bunker cluster bomb that exploded almost under his feet.

Tanked a dozen of shockwaves from Accel black wings.

I get the Thor case, since maybe he was also using the belt of strength and he has that bullshit spell, but Ingrid victory was fucking bullshit, especially since Touma's precog kept him from dying against Rensa.

You're in fundamental disagreement with Kamachi here, then, who says that Touma still loses to soldiers.

The way I see it is that Touma's strengths are unreal endurance and perfect instinct, but his actual offensive output is pretty poor.

It's like a fighting game where the "Touma" character has 10x the HP of other characters and is being played by the god of fighting games, but I'm playing the "Tsuchi" character who gets attacks that outrange everything Touma has and whose frames allow me to just jam dial-A repeatedly and win.

(Incidentally, Touma is still top tier, because he autowins versus the characters who only have specials.)

it's just a fun series to talk about
characters and concepts are interesting enough to discuss

It's true that Tsuchimikado is more skilled, but it doesn't matter after this:

>Rensa used her cyborg body to charge up to Kamijou at supersonic speeds. She swung the white wings on her back to the right and left simultaneously. That boy should not have been able to do anything. The speed was one problem, but she had also changed her settings to eliminate all slight changes to her expression and the surface of her body. In other words, Kamijou could not use the precognition he had gained via experience.

>However…

>Kamijou Touma’s body sank down as if they had arranged it ahead of time.

>Rensa was moving at such tremendous speed that he could never have made it in time if he had started moving after seeing what she was doing. Yet the boy accurately waited for Rensa as if he had foreseen her exact actions.

If a fighter going at supersonic speed didn't manage to tag Touma, how the hell can Tsuchimikado do it?

I know that I'm in disagreement with Kamachi, but holy shit.
