Divine intervention or weapons forged to strike down gods and otherworldly creatures alike. Pair this up with a religiously fanatical character that quotes various passages from the bible predominately the Old Testament. Such as the book of Genesis, Exodus and Leviticus. Quoting the various passages while striking down the fowl heathens with a righteous fury as he delivers the His will to the masses, by the voice or by the sword. I have never once seen law enforcement much less special forces ever winning or at least achieving a stalemate when it comes to fighting supernatural and otherworldly shit but it would be nice to see them at least win once or a couple of times. Have you read "Gate - Thus the JSDF Fought There" ? It kinda fits what you might be looking for. The JSDF blow off a dragons wing with a rocket launcher, but it survives to fight another day. It's getting an animu adaption soon so that's a thing.
Downside I give it is it generally portrays "Nippon STRONK! we do ruffing wong!" militarily and politically, but overall not bad.

Actually the military is dropping its funding quite a bit, people only focus on the drone strikes and big name spending areas. US-wise, the F-35 project gets a ton of attention, but you won't here how they've laid off a good portion of it's members because of cut backs in the budget; you can volunteer yourself out or be lucky/unlucky to be kicked out.

There'd be leaks from within as everyone is eager to get their moment in the limelight by telling their version of story. Information control would be limited extremely by the fact that indefinite detainment for any reason is enough to cause a moral panic. Even when it's foreign terrorists that everybody hates being detained, it starts a controversy. If it was domestic journalists? Nationwide blowout. You'd be hard pressed to even find soldiers willing to commit atrocities under orders and keep quiet about it, ever soldier with a funny feeling in their gut would be looking to undermine your authority and leak secrets to the press, just like with Iraq.
