Kimonos are the ceremonial stuff that looks expensive. The cheap stuff they wear on festivals is a yukata.

You don't wear a yukata in the winter, and it's usually expensive either way. Traditionally, Japanese clothing was made of hemp and cotton was saved for more expensive stuff, but the American soldiers took that away because marijuana laws, so the only ones left were the more expensive cotton ones. Japan had to import western clothes in order to adapt because America had vastly more cotton farms than Japan, but now a couple generations have passed and western clothes have become the norm while traditional clothing has become a commodity worn for special occasions similar to tuxedos and dresses.

So far, I'm a little disappointed that nobody's drawn him in a monkey suit.
