I thoroughly enjoyed every moment of it, both the hype and the show itself.
I came here yesterday asking for advice about watching the dub or the original with subs, and I ended up watching with subs. Here I am now, about 24 hours later, and I'm now finished with the show.
It was fun. I haven't really watched much anime before, but it was really thorougly enjoyable. The whole concept and idea was so ridiculous, and it was amazing. Also, I don't know if this is normal for all anime, but this show was seriously "Plot Twist: The Animated Series". Seriously, the whole anime can be boiled down to one statement:

Great show, glad I watched. Animation was mediocre, but it was still enjoyable. Over-the-top and ludicrously amusing. I actually laughed a fair amount of times at the different characters' antics. Especially Aikuro, I fucking loved how extreme all his monologues were with the slowly sliding clothes and glowing pink nipples. It was glorious.

But in serious terms, he never wrote any romantic sub-plots. Gamagori and Mako's relationship was of rivalry and respect.
Sushio and Imaishi never contradict him either. Those teases were obviously animators doing, whether for baiting people to buy the merch/BD's or them pleasing their own shipping agenda, certainly is something that usually happens in plenty of other series.

I hate to point out something like this, but the same thing can be applied to Ryuko and Mako or with Ryuko and Senketsu or with Satsuki and Gamagori or any of the other Devas, (well, maybe exceptng Inu, but that's due to their inhability to use him as more as the exposition boy).
Gama x Mako and any other "pairing" in this show are just a classic "bait and switch" in the romantic department.
