I don't understand how Jojo can be consistently ranked so high. It's entertaining as fuck but it draws absolutely no emotional response from me at all unlike pretty much everything else on that list. I'd put it high up but not over FMA, HxH and One Piece.

In the west anime/manga was still unknown to the majority of western fans besides for hardcore oldfags. Until Dragon Ball Z began showing on a regular basis on western tv channels (CN/Toonami in 1998). DBZ served as the gateway to introduce a majority of younger viewers to the shonen archtype (not all but still alot).
2000 and onwards Naruto/One Piece began to reach the states and exploded in popularity. Arguably there were more Naruto fags than One Piece fags at this point in time. Mostly cementing young anime fags perception of a battle series with world building elements that wasn't Dragon Ball/Gundam.
You can argue Gundam was better at World building before Naruto.

I couldn't believe it when Dragonball started showing on national TV, I grew up watching it on the local Japanese TV station. Most of my other exposure was VHS at the local Japanese rental store.
As an oldfag I can tell you that there was nothing special about that time. There was almost nothing available and most of it was post-apocalyptic/cyberpunk. Even the more school yard stuff tended to be martial arts or fantasy/sci-fi. It wasn't until the mid-90s or so that we started getting more variety.

I think the reason people like JoJo is because it's got a unique in universe power, looks stylish, has truly GOAT fights throughout and benefits from having a lot of (relatively) well written and developed characters due to the cast resetting for each part. I certainly think it's better than FMA/OPM/HxH/OP but in different ways. You could argue that the others do one aspect of shounen fighting manga better than the same in JJBA but I think JJBA does them all well enough such that the cumulative effect is that it's better than most of it's competition.
It's not perfect by any means though. But Part 7 really is that mind blowing.
All this said, it isn't nearly as good as Fist of the North Star.

Search your feelings, you know it to be true. Fist of the North Star will be the eternal GOAT shounen fighting manga.
Best character development, excellent power set, best story for the majority of it, best manly tears moments, iconic artwork, great fights. The fight between Fuudo and Raoh (or Rei and Yuda, or Shuu and Souther) instills more emotion than most other shounen manga do in there entire run.
It also has it's own problems but you cannot deny that Buronson is an excellent writer when he isn't made to continue his shit on longer than he intended it to go.
