It's an interesting comparison. Broadly, the SW prequels were bad because Lucas is kind of an out of touch idiot who's surrounded himself with people who only tell him his ideas are brilliant for decades. He's lost all discernment. So, like, as a result of his success, he snuffed out his own talents.
With Eva, Anno was never at any point considered anything like a visonary genius. He was making otaku anime in a failing sudido for a very limited audience of strange, picky, deranged and hard to predict wierdos. It just, as a fluke, caught on. Unlike Lucas, Anno knew his success was just accidental the whole time. He kept trying to develop as an artists by trying different things and reaching for different audiences, but never really made it. So he returns to Eva in basically the exact opposite sitaution as Lucas. He knows he isn't anything special, and the things that made it work the first time around were just random chance, basically. So any attempt to change it is so precarious, because how can you tell if this will ruin it? It's all just a wild guess with no real way to tell. All the same obvious sort of things that Lucas just blitzes through with his impenetrable shield of sycophants telling him he's great, Anno has to deal with as a mediocre person.
I don't think Rebuild works, ultimately. But it's broken in ways that show Anno is very different person now. You can see how he's older, if not exactly more mature, how his vision has changed in all kinds of interesting ways in every scene.

Episode 1 was great save for the exaggerated scenes with Jar-Jar and the existence of the Gungans. There is no other fault with it besides Jake Llyod's shitty acting.
Does it really matter what Anno does at this point? If you like Evangelion but think the rebuilds are shit nobody is forcing you to watch them. You guys just can't ignore them and enjoy the original series?
