Its how the rabid fans defend the series(and muh waifu bullshit) that gets to me.
This show is like a 'must-see' for anyone who watches anime and then think that he is pretty smart of understanding the (obvious) deep references(and better yet, make their own 'deep meanings')

Shinji is cowardly, timid and socially awkward. But he isn't hopeless, he doesn't really have a breakdown until Eva 01's backup AI crushes Toji's leg.
He doesn't put up with Asuka's bitchiness, he doesn't fawn over her or stalk her like the other boys in the class, he saves her from being fried in a pit of magma, etc. He doesn't try to impress or be measured by Asuka, and this plus his competence as a pilot makes her attracted to him.
However, his obsession with his father's approval brings out more and more beta qualities in him. He ends up going nuts, while Asuka becomes more distant from him because she becomes jealous that he is a better pilot than her.

I think the fact there are so many different interpretations of NGE is pretty good. For example, the crosses that mark Angels dying could either be in reference to third impact 'saving humanity' , or the cross shown in episode 16(?) where shinji is talking to his subconscious, and this in turn is character conflict.
And if you're talking about unofficial interpretations of things, it's even worse with NGE. Anno has said that there is absolutely no meaning or metaphors behind anything shown in Evangelion, which is not just unlikely but completely impossible from some of the stuff he's put in. I like when artists make their work ambigious towards their actual meaning; it gives the work more ground to be analysed by the individual.

I felt that some of the characters really did sorta treat Shinji like shit, and they should of just been a bit nicer to him, but fuck, he really was a faggot when it came to doing shit.
