The length is the biggest benefit. You get to see the same characters for a longer period of time. There's no sadness after 12, 24, or even 64 episodes. You get to watch them grow over time and get stronger. When characters die it really feels like you lost a friend. It's just easier to get attached to the characters and story when you're watching it for that longer period of time, that's all.

The funny thing is that it's not even close to my first anime. I actually watched Eva and Madoke in a short span of time and was on a bit of an anime high. I couldn't believe there was such a thing as bad anime, so I watched Naruto and it was also good. The only show I've dropped so far is Black Rock Shooter because it's just the OVA drawn out over more episodes, and Fairy Tail because it's a Naruto rip-off with extra comedy shoe-horned in (I really hate comedy most of the time).

Surprisingly the recent remake was not as awful as I expected it to be. Of course the original is better. I love films like this though for semi-realistic historical fiction. Samurai anime is always some far out fantasy weirdness, except maybe for Shigurui, which /a/ didn't like.
Sword of Desperation is also really cool film in the same vein, as well as the Yoji Yamada samurai trilogy, as far as newer stuff goes.
