After you finish the first route make sure you select the 'skip text already read' option and it will speed up the time considerably.
Just stick with it, you'll be done with Sumika+Meiya route in 10-12 hours of reading and you can move onto Unlimited.

Extra is just 10 hours if you keep to the main routes.
Just read Sumika/Meiya and restart the game after one of those endings to do the other route.
You can skip through the parts you already read (fucking Lacrosse) and then you'll have unlocked Unlimited.
I recommend you to read the other routes before diving into Alternative though, the impact will be greater that way.

You'll see when you get to Unlimited. The first 20 minutes of Unlimited have to be my favorite. At least it uses a lot of CGs and character sprites so it doesn't get dull.

Yes there are some small benefits to doing the side routes in Extra but really aren't necessary. Chizuru's route is completely useless and brings nothing to the table in later games unlike Tama and Ayamine.

Extra is meant to be campy and cliche. When you reach Unlimited and Alternative, Takeru often brings up the events of Extra, esp the Sumika and Meiya routes; the other routes are occasionally mentioned at times but not to the extent of Sumika or Meiya.
