Do you know of any anime that have been lost, banned or unaired/released?

The only one that I know is Shoujo Tsubaki, a movie funded and animated by one person over 5 years, which contained some scenes that were illegal at the time of creation, and were seized by the police.

There isn't really that much banned anime. I'm sure there's a fuck load of pilots that never made it outside the pitching phase to executives.

Only thing I can think of right now is Pupa. Not exactly banned but god did it get fucked over hard when they tried airing the thing. First of all the shows content caused it to lose its budget, making them have to go with 5 minute episodes. Then they couldn't find a station willing to air it uncensored so it was delayed for months until they caved and let it air censored.

The final result was an unwatchable mess. It's a shame.

I'm not sure if this counts but Mitsudomoe planned to have a full second season, but because the first season sold so poorly they only got the goahead to make like, 7 or 8 episodes.

It's weird, I thought Mitsudomoe would've been Japans kinda thing, I guess I don't understand moe like they do.

Shoujo Tsubaki was adapted by Hiroshi Harada from a Suehiro Maruo manga, released in Fnglish titled "Mr Harashi's Amazing Freakshow", (as I imagine you know OP from your Maruo pic,) and got released with English subs "Midori".

I don't really know off hand about a lot of other stuff like that that either was never released or got a western release but no Japanese one, or a delayed Japanese one.

I've recently been really into reading old Suehiro Maruo manga though, and manga from other gekiga artists. If you're into stuff like that check out the old magazine called GARO, (I don't think it's related to the current show and live-action franchise), sometimes you can find old copies in the vintage section on Mandarake and there are scans and translations of some stuff available too if you google around.

Great Thread.

Gore is fairly OK in Japan. Incest is A-OK in Japan. But Pupa wasn't just a gore show, and it wasn't just an incest show. It was straight up Preteen Incest Cannibals: The Animated Series. There's no way you could air that shit uncensored.

Discounting episodes that get delayed by current events, really not that many things get banned over in Moonland.

Seems relevant now that Type Moon adaptations seem to be the in thing right now.

Tsukihime was supposed to get an anime adaptation by JC Staff that followed Arcueid's route. They released some promo artwork here and there and screens from the episodes eventually leaked onto the internet. However the show itself never aired, it's as if the Tsukihime anime never existed at all.

Don't know of any examples of anime that have truly been lost, but this thread made me think of Despera - a highly anticipated project that was well-along in the planning phase until the intended director (Ryuutarou Nakamura) developed pancreatic cancer. The Porygon episode is the only one I can think of, but maybe he knew of others.

I know in the US two episodes were banned, one where a Tentacruel tore through a city (which was odd because a scene from that episode made it into the opening which probably confused a lot of people trying to figure out just when that happened) and an episode where James crossdressed in a bikini (because I guess they couldn't edit it out of the episode so they just cut the whole thing).

My library has computer games but I don't think they understand how they work. My local library had modern Blizzard games (including even WoW) in the games section, which is pointless because the discs are useless, it's the key you want and that's only good for the first person to check it out.

I played a shitload of Rise of Nations though thanks to my library. That was years ago though when you could still do that with PC games.

Yeah, it did, I being really confused as a kid wondering when in the series that was supposed to happen.

That one eventually aired as "the lost episode"

I think they still do that.

So did I

>>spoonfeed me please!

Haha, I can't believe someone would even do this on something that's impossible to watch anyway.

Not banned persay, but in the US the episode with Lorelei is missing from Netflix (along with any involving Black Jynx) and the official site's episode guide.
Is Lorelei still really making that many kids pop their first boner?
>>
Well Berserk has the lost Idea chapter that was removed in the tank and only has the magazine issue

Loreli is the most underrated pokegirl.
>>
>>118446716
Jynx I can understand, but Lorelei? Really? Besides being a perfect cake why would they ban her episode?

Yeah, I don't remember Kanna being part of the anime at all. I guess I just don't remember here.

There have been a few incidents where episodes of Pokemon happen too close to natural disasters, so they have to be pulled before they air. The first instance was an episode about a Wishcash making earthquakes that was supposed to air the same week that Japan had a major earthquake. As a result, the episode's never aired anywhere.

A more recent example was an episode about a sunken ship that was going to air the same week that the Korean boat sank earlier this year. They finally got around to airing it last week. (it might have been lost forever like the Wishcash episode otherwise)
>>
Not really lost, but Daicon III and IV never got released outside of laserdisc due to copyrights.
>>

Please tell me the sunken ship was the S.S. Anne.

If it wasn't that was wasted potential on their part.
>>
There's the infamous JJBA Phantom Blood movie that was so poorly received that it was never released outside of Japanese theaters.
>>
>>118447170
They're in Poke-France right now, while the SS Anne sank in Poke-Japan.

Undersea currents and shit.

Hell, they set it up in Pokemon 2000 that there were super-powerful currents that wrapped around the globe.

"Never released outside of Japanese Theaters" makes it sound like it got a nation wide theatrical release. It was shown once in one JoJo event and Araki hated it so much he demanded that it never come out.

This song was made for the movie though, so at least this bit of Jojo history survived the Phantom Blood movie disaster.

I read on /vp/ a long time ago that Earthquake is no longer used in the anime after the Wishcash episode. I stopped following the anime, so I don't know if it's true.
>>
>>118444155
nigga, i watched that anime, wtf are you sayin?
>>
>>118447366
I always thought it was something that came out in a few theaters, I didn't know Araki shut it down before it even got to that stage.

>>118447469
Are you the same retard that made a thread yesterday or today talking about how you watched the Tsukihime anime?
>>
>>118447215
They forgot the ever-useful Speedwagon.
>>
>>118447401
Yeah, Earthquake and Magnitude were banned, making Ash's Torterra a worthless jobber that never won a single battle since it had to make do with Rock Climb instead. They're able to get around it by using the move Bulldoze instead nowadays, though.

It's true. Japan has so many damn Earthquakes that they don't want to have to skip another episode due to bad timing.

Hell, back in the BW era, Japan had a huge Tsunami that caused two pivotal story episodes to get skipped (they were the episodes that were supposed to introduce Team Plasma, the villains of the season). As a result, Team Plasma ended up being written out of the season completely, so the show became even more directionless than usual. The funniest part is that Pokemon was actually attempting to do an on-going story that season up until that point.
