I liked this way better than shit like Free. No shitty melodrama and character assassinations, everyone was likable and it was overall very cozy and well animated. Wish it would've gotten a S2 but since it doesn't live off of fujobaiting, it's expected that it didn't.

Free sold 5x more because it had even bigger ship bait and melodrama for fujos to shlick. Tsuritama was about bros fishing aliens from the ocean and it still had far better handled drama and development than Free.
I don't think it needs a S2 though, the ending was perfect and I don't see what more could be added?

Tsuritama is by A-1 (as in, Birdy, im@s, Space Bros, Silver Spoon...), and directed by Nakamura Kenji (as in, [C], Ayakashi, Mononoke, Trapeze, Gatchaman Crowds...)
On the other hand, Free is by kyoani (am I kawaii uguu~), and directed by... gotta google this one, fucking kyoani no-name directors... directed by Hiroko Utsumi. Who has - ONLY - worked for kyoani, and has - ONLY - directed Free

I won't lie that I liked certain characters and episodes from Free, but in general the writing and the drama is atrocious and clearly made on spot for the fujos produce more doujins.

Actually, the DRRR series sold like hot cakes too.
For years it really made no sense for it to not have a S2, other than the fact that Brain's Base appears to hate second seasons. And money.

They hate second seasons from shows the staff doesn't really love, I guess. Natsume got like 4 seasons and the mangaka comments how much the staff treated her well and how comfy making the entire thing was. Plus they even animated an oneshot by the same artist.
Natsume as an animated series sold less than DRRR, but the manga sells solid and the merchandise too.

The producers want to make money with those shows and the latter is what the target audience (fujoshits) wants for whatever reason, so they give them what they want. It's sad, but it can't be helped. Just look at how bad male SoL shows without any big melodrama sold.
