Polygon looks like they're going for just the core action scenes in the manga. It probably won't do a good job conveying the core of the manga but that's not what they're going for anyway. It's fanwanking.

Well, most anime do it by having the character narrate what they're thinking. Spoken dialogue is the parallel to speech bubbles and 1st person narration is the parallel to thought bubbles. But Punpun purposely does a weird thing where everything Punpun feels, thinks or says is in black panels and often presented in 3rd person.
Basically, I don't know how you would translate this weird artistic choice to anime and make it distinct like it was in the manga.

I don't think Punpun would be impossible, doable but they wouldn't be able to make a near PERFECT adaption, I think SHAFT would be the best studio to capture Punpun's wild exaggerations.

I didn't meant the fast text stuff, no. As I recall, most of the characters' thoughts are accompanied with some random stuff on background all the time. Which is basically 60%+ of any episode.
Shaft could probably pull it off, but it'd have to be ridiculously long and there'd be many episodes with just dialogue and no action.

I think you actually could adapt it.
The only problem is that the adaption would be either shit or it wouldn't pay for itself.
Because It would probably be similar to Tenshi no Tamago, but it would have to be way longer than a normal TV anime, while having a high quality to be true to the original work.
The length and quality would make it very expensive, but I don't think the mainstream would like and buy it.

I've got the feeling that even If Punpun can't be adapted well, it will definitely still get an anime. I'm obviously not asserting it, but I feel there's more money to be made with it.
