What happened to the whole 10-bit anime controversy back in 2011?
I stopped caring about 10-bit vs 8-bit as soon as I got a new PC so I got out of the loop quite early.
Did this actually reduce file sizes in these last 3 years like it was supposed to do?

They weren't wrong either, its just that people saw the quality gains and said to hell with the file size benefits and ignored them.

The issue is not with the bitness settings, it's that the encoders either constrict the encoder so the quality is shit or they bloat the filesize and get no gain in quality after a certain point. It's even worse because that point varies from scene to scene.

10bit pros:
Better quality:filesize ratio.
Deals better with banding. (Although the encoders who say this are going to use debanding filters anyway, overpowering any effect 10bit is going to have)
10bit cons:
- Far more resource-intensive to decode.
- No hardware-accelerated decoding, has to fully be decoded through software.
- Lack of compatibility with certain shitty restrictive setups that have enough power to decode 10bit, but not the software to do so.
These imply:
- Lack of compatibility with any system not powerful enough to decode it.
- Less battery on mobile devices.
