I remember a few years ago everybody said Madoka had no influence on the anime industry and so NGE was undoubtedly better than it.

For someone who has expacted things to get bad any single moment, at some point I've had an uncertain feeling of impeding catastrophe.
Then, it dragged on for a few episodes.
That's the best way to describe it - there is no sudden and vivid suffering, it's the anticipation of suffering that makes it. The stakes feel heavy.
At the point we're at, it's becoming comparable to Madoka in terms of amount of shit to put up with.

Picking up this show has actually been a bad idea, I liked its drama a lot but its gentle way which did not involve episodes over episodes of girls crying and screaming are making me quite tired of other dramas which are more shock focused.
Its a really unsettling piece of work which in my opinion doses well the SoL, the development and the drama. Furthermore I really like the fact the MC is courageous as fuck and does her best to keep on smiling to support her friends, she became girl of the season for me after the way she supported Togo last episode

It's "cheap and easy" to quickly create some suffering in order to have readers or viewers be both distracted and to empathize or have sympathy for the character. Strengthening audience emotions helps sell character goods. The old school method of developing a plot and having situations and characters develop uses too many minutes. The modern anime audience in japan (just like here) seems to be becoming more impatient about waiting for plot payoff. That's all part of the common lamentations of Miyazaki, Anno, and the Self-Appointed One That Will Save Anime.
