Does anyone else feel that older anime look better than newer ones on BD, especially 90s anime?
>>
>>117372908
better shading
more colors
that awesome irregular looking strokes from traditional inking
yeah they do look awesome on BD
>>
Depends on the anime themselves.

Cowboy Bebop animation quality would be better than generic 1 season anime these days. Its just cost production differences.
>>
If the show was shot on film and had a good transfer to BD then it'll often look better than early or even relatively recent digital anime.
>>
Different reference level.

A current anime quality is at least 2-3x as good as anything from the 90/80. The BD quality of it however only improves by at the most 2x.

A older anime BD usually improves the quality by at least 10x.

It is not better. It is just more noticeable

>>117373045
This also.
>>
>>117373060
akira and ghost in the shell, look incredible on BD
>>
>>117372908
Only high budget anime looks good on BD.
>>
>>117373060
Yea, I guess you're right about that, but I do agree with >>117373040 about the colors. They just seem a lot more vivid when I watch BDs from older anime (especially from the 90s).
>>
I wonder how animation costs now compare to those of the 90s.

Pretty much this.
Well-preserved film makes the transfer to higher definition better than digitally mastered anime from the early 2000s, before HD was really a thing.
>>117373167
A lot of older anime had absolutely shit DVD transfers. That's why "remastering" became a thing. When companies that cared about their more successful products would go back and rescan the film itself for the DVD instead of transferring from a Betamax tape like a lot did.
Take Lodoss for example. This is from the old US Manga Corps DVD. It looks like shit.
>>
>>117373379
Now here's that same shot on the recent Blu-ray.
See what a difference a proper remaster can make?
>>
>>117373424
>>117373379
On the subject of remastering, remember when people used to hate the difference in colouring that occurred due to the remastering?

Oh yeah, found people that thought the over-saturation of the poor DVD transfers were "warmer" in tone and therefore "better."
>>
>>117373901
But really, remasterings, especially for HD on a Blu-ray really brought out the subtle details that were much closer to the original intent of the animation teams.
>>
>>117373901
>>117373945
I think the first time that it hit me just how shitty old DVD transfers were was when SDF Macross got remastered. That or Utena's (can't remember which remaster I saw first).

Whatever you say buddy.
>>
It's more dramatic when you go from some component master on LD to a well transferred BD, versus HDTV to BD. Even some mess like Odin would look fantastic in 1080p.
>>
>>
>>117372908
It's probably the quality difference over the years. Newer stuff is made for HD now, so it's how you see it originally, whereas older stuff you watched on VHS or DVD and seeing it on BluRay is much more satisfying.

I agree though, as long as it's not DNR'd to hell and back. I love seeing the brush strokes and details on a good BD master of an older anime.

Delicious.
Film grain is under appreciated.
>>

Yes.

>ghost in the shell
No, the BD looks terrible and is cropped for some reason. The HDTVrip is actually the best release of GITS.

Oh man I love Utena's BDs. They're so gorgeous.

Glorious 35mm transfers.

>>
>>117372908
Cel anime just straight up looks better than digitally colored anime in a fair comparison. Digital is getting better but it just doesn't compare to how nice and organic cel anime look.

Also I'd argue that it's a stylistic thing too. A handful of modern anime use minimalist techniques, while older anime tended to have a lot of details that modern styles eliminate.

>>
OP should watch the Space Adventure Cobra BDs. This was from the 80s, and I think this is probably one of the best looking TV anime BD around.
>>
Why did this remaster have so much damn dust on it? Watching on my 48-inch it's so distracting.
>>
>>117378391
I'm currently watching the rips a guy on /m/ did. They look really, really good. The OP animation has a lot of digital noise removal going on, but the actual episodes themselves have very little.
>>
No i dont

The good to shit ratio has always been the same, but the older you get the more time is allowed to whittle out the truly shitty stuff
>>
>>117378763
Yeah EG/RX782 is pretty fucking based (too bad he'll probably "retire" soon). All of his gundam releases are the best.

The OP and ED for Turn A is actually digitally animated, so it's upscaled hence why it doesn't look nearly as good. The actual episodes are on glorious 35mm film which is why the BDs look so damn good. Can't wait for the second box to come out so I can rewatch my favourite gundam show.
>>
>>117378738
Eh, it happens. I thought the BDs for the Big O looked pretty nice (for season one anyway). You can see the unfortunate quality drop to SD digital animation in season two. Plus, grain perfectly suited the atmosphere of the show. I think s2 did have more actual animation overall, so it's not all bad.
>>
>The OP and ED for Turn A is actually digitally animated, so it's upscaled hence why it doesn't look nearly as good.
Ah, okay. Thanks for that bit of info. I just assumed it was DNRing going on because the copies they had were bad or something.

Do you know when the second box is set to come out? I'm still working through the first, so it's no huge rush, but i was just wondering.
>>
>>117378988
Forgot to quote >>117378920

Sorry about that.
>>
>>117378988
>>117379027
They'll land December 25th. IIRC, some anon bought the first BD box for RX782 just so he could encode it. I suppose he'll do the same thing again.

Actually the OP/ED for Turn A are upscaled surprisingly well. It looks much better than a lot of the early SD digital anime that came out around that time.
>>
>>117378978
That sounds disappointing because I just now finished watching season 1. But this dust is driving me nuts. I have really high contrast settings on my screen, really dark darks and really bright brights is how I like it, and it suits this show as well as other of my favorite anime. But it makes these dust spots so much more noticeable than what you can even see here (assuming your computer screen is on normal settings). It's like whoever photographed the cells had really bad dandruff or something.
>>
That's because they're not digital, dumbass.
>>
>>117378848
>parroting the same old shit again and again
>>
>>117377692
Yeah buddy. I fucking love film grain, Berserk was an absolute treat to rewatch.
>>
>>117379184
Thanks for the info. I'm slowpoking through Turn A and a few other shows, so it'll probably get online right around the perfect time for me.

I'd been meaning to watch the series for years, but I never did, and in a way I'm glad I never did, because seeing it on BluRay for the first time is really awesome.
>>
>>117379189

The dust is either from dirty reels of film or they were inherently there from the day they photographed the cels. Debris removal can always be done, but it's laborious and expensive, so really only Hollywood would bother. Honneamise had a lot of dust too.
>>
>>117379189
Oh yeah, if you have contrast cranked up; then it's not surprising that you'll be seeing a lot of dust. That's just the way film is and it's not something a lot of people are going to be bothered to remove like >>117379345 pointed out.

Well, you won't see them in season two anymore (heh).
>>
Older anime seems to have quite a bit of grainy shit. Maybe its just bad encoding or maybe I have the aesthetics wrong.
>>
>>117379456
>not liking grain
Tasteless casual detected.
>>
I just watched Jin Roh and it felt so good on my eyes. I almost want to watch it again just to appreciate the animation.
>>
>>117379456
>Older anime seems to have quite a bit of grainy shit.

Grain is just the way film is. There's nothing wrong with it. Degraining anything, live action movies or anime is a fucking atrocity. Grain removal is bad practice in video editing because it usually fucks things up to get rid of what is a non-problem in the first place.
>>
>>117379584
This is correct. A really infamous example is the Ultimate Hunter Edition of Predator. The original print is pretty grainy (a lot of McTiernan's films tend to have grain) and they went overboard trying to get rid of it. It looks downright terrible in some shots.
>>
>>117379550
God damn, I forgot how amazing the art was in this movie.

>>117372908
For BDs to help you actually need to have extra detail to show. Older shows are on film and can be rescanned, but many newer shows are being rendered at 720p or lower, with no higher quality source (which is a fucking sin in the TV industry, by the way). It's why the BDs of Planetes, a show from 11 years ago, look phenomenal (most of the time, there's the occasional scene with sub-1080p source) while most shows today don't look so great.

I think the did another BD release of this that isn't atrocious.

>>
>>117379788
Such a shame too, it's one of my all time favorite movies and the 2008 BluRay is fine, but a little flat color wise to me.

The 3D version actually looks okay from the screenshots I've seen online.
>>117379838
Someone on /tv/ posted a couple of webm's from the Ultimate Hunter Edition, but I'm not sure I saved any of them.
>>
>>117379584
>Grain is just the way film is. There's nothing wrong with it.
Grain sucks, but removing it from film only makes things worse. Otherwise, there's no reason to add grain in this day and age.
>>
>>117379974
There are legitimate artistic reasons to use grain if you want to see a certain effect.
>>
Why can't Gainax hurry up and make a BD of NGE/EoE already?
>>
>>117372908

For one thing, they actually have noses.
>>
>>117380009
Original cels are lost or damaged.
>>
>>117379974
Nobody was advocating inserting grain

>>117380009
Because Gainax doesn't own NGE and EoE you dumb fuck. The master has full control over all of it.

Why do you even need a BD? I actually hope they don't make one, it makes it more of a timeless thing.
>>
>>117380009
I pray that after Anno is done shitting up the Eva franchise with Rebuild; he'll pull the BDs for NGE/EOE out of his ass.
>>
>>117380009

They want to milk the brand. Can't have them Eva BDs out ahead of 4.0, you need 4.0's BD to release first. I just wonder what other BDs were going to see from now till then, even from Gainax like with Otaku no Video.
>>
>>117380051
>why do you want a higher quality source
>>
>>117379797
Planetes is very clearly upscaled, but it certainly does look better than most of its contemporaries. Overman King Gainer looks pretty good for a show of that era, so it's probably a Sunrise thing.
>>
>>117380051
Yeah, they really ruined the timelessness of Macross when they released it on BD, I'm glad Evangelion hasn't had the same treatment.
>>
>>117380095
>otaku no video

Fuck, man. I still have a DVD of that shit, I haven't thought about it in probably ten years.

>>117380110
NGE and EoE already look great, and the source material wouldn't magically become higher quality. I just feel like Anno would have done it already if he actually wanted to, but I guess we'll see with the 25th anniversary or something. I like that NGE DVDs are sort of rare, like you can't just go to fucking rightstuf and buy them. I don't think he'd want to cheapen the original series by doing all that remastering shit.
>>
>>117380296

>they really ruined the timelessness of Macross when they released it on BD
I hope your being facetious, the ADV DVDs were fuck awful, and Robotech will always be fucking awful looking as well because they're never getting the new materials.
>>
>>117380319
Assuming Anno doesn't just cheapass it and upscale for the BD, then yes it would look better. You get the original film (the TV series is probably on 16mm and EoE is probably on 35mm) and do a proper remaster and there will be far more detail captured in the BD. EoE looks great, but imagine a proper remaster to 1080p. That shit would be amazing.
>>
>>117380319
>I don't think he'd want to cheapen the original series by doing all that remastering shit.
Are you a fucking troll? Why the hell would you not want an HD scan of NGE?
>>
>>117380424
>>117380410

Even if the TV series is 16mm and not necessarily going to look spectacular, we have dozens of other 16mm TV series out on BD that look amazing. Are you afraid the BDs might highlight animation flubs like they did with Nadia? Big deal, they're completely unimportant. In terms of remastering, Eva is just like any other 90s series and not at all special.
>>
>>117380424
Because it looks beautiful already? You don't need a BD just to have a BD. What's up on the internet is really high quality.

>>117380410
A remaster is pointless, one because the original film may or not be fucked, and two because it looks great as it is.

>far more detail captured
Now you're just advocating a remaster just because you want it to be shiny and new.
>>
>>117380555

>they shouldn't have a 1080p rescan just because I personally find 480i 8.5GB DVDs to be more than enough.

Suit yourself, you don't have to watch the BDs.
>>
>>117380406
I was making the point that Eva would not be somehow tainted by a BD release through sarcasm.
>>
>>117380555
>Now you're just advocating a remaster just because you want it to be shiny and new.
Yes, I am. I want to see it in all its glory. What's so wrong about that?
>>
>>117380555

What's up on the internet is not really high quality, have you seen cel animation in HD?
