“Today's anime fans and creators are exclusively into anime. In the past, there were people in the industry who wanted to do other things"

>1985 was curiously the same year Yoshiyuki Tomino’s Mobile Suit Z Gundam aired, a series which Hikawa referred to as one where “Tomino was forced to do Gundam again.” The year was in many ways the end and a new beginning for Japanese animation; the end of innocence for an emerging industry.

> “There isn’t much diversity now,” Anno lamented. “Today's anime fans and creators are exclusively into anime. In the past, there were people in the industry who wanted to do other things, couldn’t get any other work except in anime, which was good."

>“Our generation was when anime fans started coming in," he continued. "But even then, we liked other things too, like tokusatsu.”

>Despite his feelings, Anno hoped panels such as these could inspire future generations of animators.

>“It would be hard to make animation like the shows we say today," he said. "I don’t mean to be nostalgic, but I hope what we saw today somehow leads to the future.”

Looks like an improvement.

Someone needs to stop hanging out with Miyazaki.

Anno is mad that the new generation doesn't like Sentai as much as he did.

He has a point but still anno's kinda part of the problem.

what the animation industry need is a revolution
or something like that to change the way anime is financed.

Since the majority of anime studio mainly produce anime on behalf of the Production Committee "TV networks/Book Publishers" to sell thus holding back the medium artistically.

But whatevers more anime for all in the end of the day.
Side note: Anno should of bought out parts of the industry.

As much as I hate it I got to agree with the Master Autist on this one.
This generation of authors only want to do their own fantasies again and again, partly because it's worth doing financially and partly it's the only thing they know.
You can't deny that older anime had a lot more variety, in terms of characters, settings and subjects. Nowadays almost everything that doesn't take place in a high school is considered niche. Exceptions like SnK exist but not a lot of them.

old people have been complaining about how the younger generations suck for thousands of years
ironic to hear anno complain about diversity though when he did eva, then eva movies, then 10 years later more eva movies

Because animes are merchandise, not art.

he's not complaining about the young generation being young, he's complaining about what was once innovative is now standard and now people are upholding the poorly made imitations on virtues that don't actually have. pandering to adult otaku was only ever a step forward while the bulk of the industry was still aiming at kids. Now that pandering to otaku is widespread practice, it holds no value in and of itself. it was the relationship between creator and industry that needed to be mimicked, not the crude form or even content of the product.
