It's smart. It lets them recreate history while not excluding entire nations worth of cute girls as potential additions. The abyss are just a stand in for the proper enemy in any given conflict. That way they could represent Americans, or Japanese, or anything in between, and it'd make sense no matter which nation you're commanding to fight them. Meanwhile, the backstory of them being malicious spirits along with some vague voiced lines keeps people guessing as to their true nature. I don't think it'll ever go full grimdark though. It's basically the same setup as the Neuroi, though I appreciate that they put effort into giving the abyssals some character.

Well some of those make up for an excellent design, story or personality for the character. It's not the amazing achievements in battle. Even Yamato was a frickin hotel with sinkings whatsoever, but it's one of the more famous vessels of the war. At very least Tirpitz makes for a great cold and lonely character with her being secluded into a Norwegian fjord for years. I'm not sure if it's possible to shoehorn some Norway-related lines but that should be cool. Regia Marina wasn't great though. I'm not sure if they had any heroic ships or ships with good stories since they lost a couple of their battleships in that silly Taranto incident to some outdated biplane britbong torpedo bombers. That doesn't make for a cool story. Scharnhorst and Gneisenau could easily get a ton of cool lines for everything they did.

While the daylight was ruled by the carrier and the operative level stuff was dictated by them you have to give the shoutout to jap cruisers and destroyers that were able to stomp allied vessels in nearly every night engagement on the pacific. Everything about jap ships, their doctrine and crews was superior for night fighting. Not that night stuff mattered in the long run because even japs started fumbling once they started to feel attrition on their destroyer force and americans mastered the radar which enabled them to rule the night.
It was even claimed in the japanese navy that brown -eyed people could see better in the dark than the filthy blue-eyed gaijins and thus anything a gaijin could see , a japanese could see better. Americans were said to claim that japs had bad eyesight due to them slanty eyes so I'm not sure who to believe though. Either way the jap lookouts were quite adept at their jobs during night engagements.

The whole "Hotel" moniker comes because nobody seriously considered fielding the Yamato-class and Nagato-class battleships until they had clearly no other choice. The Kongou, which were fast enough, served admirably in the Java sea, Indian Ocean and fairly well at Guadalcanal.

This, though, is definitely a poor decision. At that point, though, Japan's issue was less that they had bad planes (they didn't) than that they didn't have good pilots to use them.

Wing folding gear made the planes heavier. It also would have made it harder to put fuel tanks in the wings, which was part of the reason Japanese carrier aircraft had such great range. They were not prepared to give up the range and light weight to carry a few more planes.

This is working around on multiple levels. The kongous were functional but their armor was to light; as were their anti-air capabilities. The kongou class's armor was designed to detonate cannon shells before then pierced the armor. It didn't work. The yamato class was just useless. It burned up too much fuel, there wasn't enough space on board for effective management, the guns rocked the boat to the point that the ship had to settle before the other armaments could open up, the anti-air guns were the clunky box fed ones that jammed, damage control was awful, they were slow, and they were overvalued. Oh, and it had abysmal anti-air capabilities. I'm all but certain an iowa class would've beaten it.
