It's still filled with pointless filler episodes, but Ash/Satoshi's characterization is much better, actually acknowledging him as a veteran trainer, and the cast generally works much better together than in any of the seasons after the original since they all have their own dynamic going.
Also, the animation is much better than in any previous season. Even when it isn't a high budget episodes, you don't get attacks that are just cut ins to stills anymore, with everything being animated. Once in a while you get higher budget episodes that are comparable to the movies.
