I've been here since before the game was fully translated. She's always had something of a fanbase. It's not some recent thing out of nowhere where people latched on, ever since HF was translated especially she's had a decent base. Girl has been a source of conversation in Fate threads for more than a few years now so that's a pretty hard statement to make. Although early on she was known a lot more for Sakurafish than anything worm related, until that nickname caught on a few years back.
Either way shit's certainly gotten more extreme with time, as it's entirely "Pick your side" as any normal discussion is about impossible.

Besides, logically, the Shadow was attacked by people and was submerged in lakes, so she would have awoken wet or with torn clothes if it was actually her in the early parts of HF, what with us seeing her almost constantly.
What the nightmares showed was that the closer she was to becoming the full grail, the further and further she lost her humanity, and became one with AM.
Further, yes, when she accepted the Shadow, she was herself, but with caveats, like her mind breaking down from becoming the grail, and the real damage AM was doing to her, thus why her actions were so contradictory, like sparing Rin, or coming to visit and tell Rin and Shirou to run.
You're right that if we like a character, we should accept the good and bad, but most of us who aren't reverse trolls or just idiots going in for shit slinging recognize those faults but think a lot of what people say about her is mired in negative bias. She has resentment, but we see her talking to Shirou about things like how she feels about Rin and the Matou family, showing how she dealt with things. Impressive for someone without therapy. But those feelings are there and caused misunderstandings and caused her to make grave errors.
That is some of the things you don't really see from the con side, and ironically even less from the so called pro side. She isn't someone to just be pitied, but is pretty awesome, but has large flaws that can't be denied.
I like her as a character, but waifuing or whatever isn't necessary. I can balance positive and negative.
