Let's have another manga thread for this night.

Started reading Dorohedo after years of being put off by it's art. Finished the first volume, it's good so far, have yet to find anything conclusive plot wise though aside have to find the guy who cursed me.

Also finally finished Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou early this week, I liked it quite a bit, but don't found it a timeless masterpiece like some people claim.

Both Dorohedoro and YKK are some of my favorites. I think YKK has been a bit oversold in the past few years on /a/. I do believe it deserves that praise, but some people can be way too enthusiastic about it. Dorohedoro's biggest strength is its cast of characters in my opinion. You begin to care about people on every side of the fights, which makes it really tense watching them fight each other.

Yesterday I bought Lychee Hikari Club and am starting to read it. I read the first few chapters back when Hox started translating it years ago and then it got delayed/stopped for a long time and got licensed. Not sure if it's online anywhere but I think it's worth the buy.

Also bought the final Punpun volume which came with a watch where the numbers are replaced by the transformations Punpun goes through in the series along with his mom and uncle.

Besides those I've been reading Ashita no Joe slowly alongside the anime.
>>
New Dorohedoro chapter when?
>>
Catching up on my Tezuka backlog. Lot of great stuff, some not so much (can't strike gold every time). I'm just glad that Tezuka is still getting English publications.
>>
>>116691933
I agree with everything. I'm gonna probably read two or three more volumes of Dorohedo tonight and post my impressions about it.

The thing with YKK is that it probably got axed too soon, a lot of the plot elements were just ignored (i.e Misago, The guy with the flying fish, Takahiro grown up, Alpha sister which is flying, what happened to the world, that humanish stone thing, why there's people flying out there or why the surviving humans don't procreate more to not let them go extinct and so on, etc). In the end I felt like "Yeah, everybody died slowly and just the alpha sisters (and presumably the other robots) survived." Of course I knew plot wasn't the main point of the manga, but I don't know, felt cheap I guess.
>>
Who worried that unique poster count is going to reveal there are only 6 different manga readers on /a/ here?

I'll agree that YKK is kinda oversold around here, but that's probably because it's not as well-known elsewhere. It's definitely one of my favorites, but it's not the sort of thing that has widespread appeal, like say, Aria (even though they share so much in common). YKK is much more slow and melancholic than Aria - at some points it feels as though it's Ashinano just developing his craft and scenery porn. Not to say that that's bad, but for some people it can be a bit sparce.

>>116692483
The 'plot' elements were absolutely never important. I'd say they were there mostly to establish more of the setting's tone - it's a world where so many things are unknown, and mysterious, and with slow development. I definitely wanted to see more of these things, but at the same time, I don't think it's in Ashinano's style to show so much. I imagine he could easily have done some great stuff with Alpha's sister flying on the Taapon, for instance. I'd have liked some resolution on that - with her presumably landing back on Earth eventually, and meeting others. But well, no use thinking on what could be.
>>
>>116693013

>that unique poster count

What?
>>
>>116693614
Look at the bottom right corner of your screen.
>>
>>116692483
>YKK axed
Do you have a source for it being axed, or is that just speculation? Afternoon doesn't work on a popularity contest system.

>>116691933
Is that really you, Deepfag?

>>116693013
Y'know, sometimes I wonder.
>>
>>116693708

I don't see it, must be my 4chan X fork. I only see the usual post count / image count / page number. I'll turn it off and look again.
>>
>>116693173
Feels pretty shit

>>116691933
Do you have the watch? I was eyeing one online but I heard the band is big and I have skeleton wrists.

I just bought a tablet and started reading manga on that, although it's only 64 gig so I'll have to get a card or something to add stuff to. I've been reading SOIL and also have to look into getting the first volume of Densha Otoko. It's the version from CMX by the Yowamushi Pedal guy.
>>
>>116693832
Pure speculation from my part, maybe he wanted to end it? I mean, there was a lot of key elements of the history simple felt ignored, last volume entirely was incredibly rushed compared to the rest of the manga, at least in my opinion. It was just Takahiro moves away, the girl wants to grown up, she got a job here and there, four chapters later they have a kid...."
>>
>>116693865

I will probably be rightfully called retarded, but I still don't see a unique count.
>>
>>116694153
For me it's on the bottom right of the page, some random numbers with dashes. If you hover the mouse it'll say which is which.
>>
>>116694153
The hovertext is posters, not unique. Though I remember it saying Unique Posters prior.

I'd say it was more a way of showing that as things went on in that last volume, the more time passed between chapters. Keeping in mind that YKK ran for a dozen years, regular readers would probably feel melancholic to see these characters grow up so fast, when for the majority of the manga they stayed the same age.

That's one of the things with YKK - Alpha can't visibly age, so she serves to remind us that aside from her, most things are ultimately transient, temporary. Her house breaking down from a storm, Takahiro growing up and leaving, Ojii-san and Sensei telling her stories of things that are gone... the last volume just hammers these things in by making them so sudden between each chapter.
>>
>>116694341

The other numbers have always been there, but the "posters" one is new. It definitely did say "unique posters" for most of the day, it must have been changed in the last few hours.
>>
>>116693013

Also, a little late there Vertical:

They decided to do Tezuka digitally.

I'll be frank, I didn't care at all for Koharu no Hibi. Yanderes are one thing, but trying to pass Koharu off as pure and sickly sweet struck me as superficial. I don't see what Akira saw in her. At least the story outright spells that Koharu likes him just because - an obsession that should frankly be unhealthy, but he just seemed to go along with dating her because she liked him - there's no real chemistry here.

Also, considering they're OOP and most people don't know how to find all of them online (since they're not on your everyday online readers) they're probably going to get at least some extra life out of them. Especially Black Jack.
>>
>>116695498

I wish that Vertical would get the rights to the previously-sealed Black Jack chapters. All but 3 were published recently, but Vertical only got 3 of them (they seem to think that they published all of the sealed chapters, so I guess this was before the new JP Perfect Edition releases).

I don't suppose anyone here reads World Trigger or anything like that? I found a year's worth of Viz rips of their weekly JUMP on a semi-private french tracker with literally 1 seeder on most of the torrents. Archiving for posterity, but my ratio is pretty bad now.

They're on t411, and inferring what everything means with Google Translate isn't hard.

>>
>>116696001
They have very low QC on their manga, take months to publish physical copies for some series and used to have a tendency to drop titles after one or two volumes. A lot of their stuff is also released in small publishing numbers so if you don't know about it being released it's gone OOP within a couple months.

Their hentai branch is apparently ok but the yaoi/bl side has always had issues. /a/ had a shitstorm about Fakku killing panda with c&ds but that sort of thing is what fujoshit have had to deal with for years because of DMG/DMP.
>>
>>116696072

I find that World Trigger's fights are pretty good and it does things very cooly, with no leaps of logic or anything, but there's just something odd about the manga taken as a whole.

Its characters are too chill with the sort of situation they're in. There's hardly any tension to speak of, not when everyone present is serenely smiling all the time. It could use being more emotional about its developments - as things are it doesn't feel like anything's at stake.

I think this is a shot to nowhere but I might as well try...

Anyone know an action/crime manga from the 90s to 2004 that's like Gunsmith Cats but involves a secret organization that's kinda like the CIA and FBI?

The title is an acronym, like the R.O.D. series. I don't remember if this organization was trying to keep aliens/supernatural creatures secret from the public but it's a possible detail.

Been trying to remember this for the past year and I'm thinking this manga may be too obscure to find for me on the internet and the only solution is to go to the library I last borrowed the series from back in 2002-2004.

I'd assume it would be slightly less obvious.
>>
>>116702647
There's not really much of a difference, at least in my opinion. It's just a matter of what you feel comfortable with. For the above pages, I needed to fix things before cleaning, so it was easier to do the redraws then than at the final point.
>>
>>116702605
>>116702759
Hmm, I see. Are you fixing the bleedthrough?
>>
>>116703066
Working on some pre-cleaning stuff with the bleed and the page that's bleeding through, but the majority comes out after leveling and dodging, so it's not terribly important that I do the things I'm doing.

Flip the page that's bleeding through, invert it, overlay it over the bleed on low opacity.

-or-

Flip the page that's bleeding, overlay it over the bleed, set blending mode to Divide.
>>
>>116703222
Oh, that's clever. Yeah, I generally make do with dodging but I'll try out that method next time.

This is what it looks like with the low opacity inverts. Don't remember the rotation on the individual pages of the spread, so couldn't counter rotate the pages bleeding through to match it better, but it does alright with a bit of manual positioning.

Don't know if it's actually serialized or just another one shot, but the pages I posted are from ambiguously chapter 1 in this/last month's Harta. There's a one shot of it already though, and this chapter seems to predate that one shot chronologically, so I'd assume it is serialized.

Hey /a/, what are some of the essential manga that everyone should at least try reading?

Just started reading Kaiji and really enjoying it so far.
>>
Have been reading through Rosario+Vampire.

Im on season 2 now and I have to say Ive really enjoyed it.

Watched the anime years ago, and while I liked it at the time the obnoxious amount of fanservice and ecchi wore on me.

Suffice to say the manga is a big improvement. Less obnoxious fanservice, had me dying several times, some pretty decent character development for the MC as well as the rest of the main cast.

This is the first harem manga Ive actually read since I started reading manga and I have to say Im really impressed with how well done it is.
>>
>>116703996
No such thing. Except maybe Yotsuba. Otherwise, look at the wiki, charts and maybe Hox's list, especially for oneshots.
>>
>>116703996
Whatever you like, anon. The only thing that matters is that you know where to look, and read enough, to find more manga you enjoy. And the more you read the more you find.

If you're going to read FKMT you should read Kurosawa, plenty of /a/ has read it and it gets mentioned from time to time. Be warned of second hand embarrassment though.

Also, in my opinion, Kaiji and Akagi should be watched, if only for the based as fuck soundtracks and narrators. Unless you're past what's animated, then move along

I'll try to finish Appleseed tomorrow.

It's more fun reading the physical tome of it. Blasted through it in one long session. Borrowed it from the library before it got scanned. Read Akai Yuki yet?
>>
>>116705468

Probably not until a full tank comes out? The story is still really early in development, so it's hard to see where it will go. It's only had 2 or 3 chapters. I think I also recall that this series isn't meant to go on for very long, but I don't actually know if that's just something I imagined.

>>116705735

For Wanitokagegisu, if anyone wants to help out deadbeat for redraws on it, that'd definitely speed things up. For a script I should be able to pick up where I left off sooner or later.
>>
>>116705799

Your enjoyment of MB basically depends on how much you enjoy Nisioisin meta and how unattached you are to the initial premise.

Kumagawa parts are best parts, also it should have ended at the first ending. The real ending wasn't as fresh
>>
>>116705847
It's a shame, I'd really like to be able to buy Tatsumi's work, but import costs are a bitch.

>Kappas story and the last one
You are literally my fucking nigga.

I'd assume you've done all of Tatsumi, Fallen Words, Black Blizzard and the three collection.

How much Tezuka have you done? Phoenix, Buddha, Apollo's Song, Book of Human Insects, Ayako? Not quite gekiga, but well influenced. MW and Ode to Kirihito are darker, not really a fan - I like the gekiga stuff by the actual gekiga guys.

Tsuge has some oneshots translated. Munou no Hito, one of his best, a series isn't fully done unfortunately, but god it's good.

There's A Single Match and A Box Man floating around. A Single Match is way over the head, still enjoyable. There's Red Colored Elegy, kind of like Asano but from decades ago, other people like it much more than I do.

Lone Wolf and Cub is good. Going towards more modern Garo and Ax, Jiro Taniguchi's works are impressive. Haruka no Machi E, Walking Man, Benkei in New York. If you haven't read Palepoli and Furuya's other stuff you should, and there's also Nishioka Kyoudai. There's always Golgo as well.

You might find Igarashi Daisuke interesting as well.
>>
>>116706064

you can always support the author and buy a book of theirs or something and then just say a thanks to everyone else. I feel like that's the best way to give something back/support the point of scanlating the stuff if you don't have the means to do other things.
>>

So for now I'll just have to continue to be a bottomfeeder and make excuses for myself.
>>
>>116706199
I've read as much Tatsumi as the scans have allowed me. Abandon the Old in Tokyo, Good-Bye, The Pushman and other stories and Kurou Fuboki, I really enjoyed the exposition about the impact of this manga in Gekiga Hyouryuu
I have read as much Furuya as Scans have allowed me as well, my favourites so far are Palepoli, Hikari Club and Picasso

I read Alabaster by Tezuka, I downloaded Black Jack and Metropolis.I'll eventually will read as much as I can.

Red Colored Elegy is literaly perfection. Really liked it, touching stuff.

I read A Single Match, I didn't liked it too much but some stories were very good.

I have Walking Man and Hotel Harbour View on my hardrive.

Thanks for the recs, bro.

On the ohter hand my coriosity has lead me to read a few Yuri and I was wondering if there was a good realistic Yaoi that's not just fanservice.
>>
>>116706509
Most likely year 24 group stuff, like from the 70s. They went sort of in parallel to the gekiga movement.

Heart of Thomas and other Hagio Moto spring immediately to mind.
>>
>>116706509
>On the ohter hand my coriosity has lead me to read a few Yuri and I was wondering if there was a good realistic Yaoi that's not just fanservice.

You can try asumiko nakamura. She has some stuff that is more along the lines of that, but still quite compelling. I liked J no Subete a lot. Yamashita Tomoko also has some interesting stuff in those catagories.

The Year24 stuff is generally shoujo but there is a lot of overlap there with BL/Yaoi undertones and stuff.

As an aside, for stuff during the Garo/AX era there's actually an AX compilation book that was put out a year or two ago by top shelf. It's a little pricey and the quality isn't good, but the selection is pretty nice.
>>
>>116706355
Well, in case of a desire to help and the lack of time, you can just drop 5 bucks to the scanner so people could get good scans to work with rather than public crap. At least you'll support the mangaka that way.
Provided that the scanner will accept the donation, though.

>>

Just picking some scans from Kickthekitty and cropping and levelling it wouldn't be a bad place to start. You get to learn a few things. If you get any better you can try redrawing shit and joining spreads better, but it won't be any worse than scans straight from the scanner.
