>where there is nothing

Wrong.

There are tons of minerals, gases and ice to harvest.

Once we figure out how to harvest it, the real space age will come, when mankind will expend like crazy because of the sudden flow of material available.

And we'll do the same mistake we did on earth: overusing it without moderation.

Away from what? My dreams?
The reality is that man is not equipped to live in space. It'd be hugely expensive to prepare long-term habitats in space - always more expensive than it would be to prepare the same habitat on earth.
>>
>>116433440

The thing that'll hinder asteroid mining is the amount of energy/power needed to do it effectively, and who to trust with that kind of power. Paraphrasing from elsewhere, but:

How to get rich quick with asteroid mining:

1. Develop the capability to capture and deorbit huge chunks of rock from space.
2. Demand money.
>>
>>116433606
>Humananity will stay on earth.

Humans are stubborn anon, if they want to go on mars or just in space, they will go on mars or in space, by any means necessary.

The same thing happened for the discovery of America, everyone was scared that there's no end to ocean and to never get back home.
Yet some men went through this and permitted "mankind" to expand to a new land.

Human migration into space is literally the only political issue I care about. Kill babies, marry who you want, give money away, whatever. I just want the souls of humanity to be free of gravity.

Even if I sound like a Char, I do believe this.
>>
>>116433981
With America, there's somewhere to go *to*.
With space, you don't have that. You just go into territory where you don't want to be, where you body gets fucked up and where you need a constant stream of resources that would be free if you were elsewhere.
>>
>>116434034
>free of gravity
Astronauts can only go to space for a few months at a time because their gravitational freedom destroys their bones.
>>
>>116432661

Space is where everything is, we need to go there. It's inevitable that we will end up going there if we don't die, it might as well be written as fate.

They didn't knew where they went. they thought they were in Asia when they discovered it.

I understand what you meant.
But if there's something else than war that humanity is best at, it's the ability to overcome obstacles and go where it wants to go.

I may not see it happen ,sadly, or I'll be too old to experience it at best.

Things are moving quickly.

Like, Drones or the Oculus for example

in the 00's it was a fucking dream to see happen on a large scale and affordable price.

>>
>>116435034
>We've got to start somewhere though
Why?
Because some people think that going to space would be a really neat thing to do.

Even Columbus' journey to America was a calculated risk and done for profit.
There is less and less to be gained from sending humans out of the gravity well other than fulfilling people's wishes of being a space-faring civilization.

Physics doesn't work like that. Astronauts in orbit actually weigh almost the same that they weigh when they are at sea level on Earth. They couldn't be orbiting otherwise.

Gravity is pretty important in astrophysics. Stop demonizing it.

Like I said before, it's a metaphor. I didn't see free humanity, or humanity's bodies, I said souls. There's no reason for us to be chained to one planet when we could exist across countless worlds, developing new cultures, identities, technology, art, etc.
>>
>>116435445

Even reading this thread should give you your answer.

You have to be an idiot if you think

"There is less and less to be gained from sending humans out of the gravity well other than fulfilling people's wishes of being a space-faring civilization."

Deorbiting asteroids/asteroid mining could collapse the entire world economy, it has that much potential especially if you get one heavy in gold content.

The prospects are insane.
>>
>you will never be a future loli riding the space train
>>
>>116435670
>we could exist across countless worlds,
This is no longer science. This is fiction.
Getting even one planet ready for human colonization would take centuries at the very least, and that's not counting the time we'd need to get there.
>developing new cultures, identities, technology, art
Why not do that on Earth, where it's happening right now, as we speak?

It's not about practicality, it's about the romance and dreams.

And you really want to stay here, in one place, forever? The universe is so vast but you're comfortable in your bedroom, alone with the glow of a computer screen. I bet you've never left your own country.

Fuck you OP. My one dream, the one thing I want in life is to go into space, not even that far just outside earth's atmosphere. I wan't to do a space walk and look down on our planet but no the sky is fucking limit because I was born too early, all I can do is watch Space related stuff and play games that take place in space.

I'd also like to be the first guy to discover an Alien life form and fuck it. Even if I died in the process they would talk about me in history classes for being the first guy to discover an alien but no one will care because they will all be thinking about how I fucked it instead.

I'll long be dead because no one cares, the only reason man got to the moon is because of a dick waving contest.

>>

>>
The possibilities of space are endless. All of you saying there's nothing out there, and it's not worth it, and the space age is over: We don't know how awesome space is because WE'RE NOT OUT THERE.

We need to get out and explore, we need to learn, expand, grow, and go out there among the stars. Like a bald frenchman once said: "Space. The Final Frontier."

We have conquered every frontier before. Our greatest challenge lies ahead: above and beyond our blue marble.
>>
>>116436119
>We should never go to the bottom of the sea because it's just water
>We should never explore the rainforests because it's more of the same trees and animals
>We should never visit another country, I can read about their culture on the internet
>We should never make a car that runs on electricity, combustion engines work fine
>We shouldn't research new computer technology, what we have now is good enough

The point is we don't have to settle for mediocrity. We are a species that has explored the Earth, we should move on to other places.
