Nigger, this shit took forever to take off. That said, once it did, the ride was amazing. For a 6-episode OVA, taking half of the episodes to world-build and set everything up is pretty fucking bad pacing. Not saying that the whole production wasn't enjoyable and charming in its own way that works to keep one watching the whole way through, but for real, the action didn't really begin until over 50% of the series is over.

The 3 first episodes are more of a parody than a genuine story. Then the 3 last are the real thing. It's like Gainax had a team meeting and went "fuck this, enough with this dumb parody. Now we're gonna show them how real shit gets". I think his u-turn gives the OVA an unusual charm.
And then Gainax surpassed themselves again with the last episode.

It's not that broad, LoGH was distributed on LD and VHS and wasn't at first broadcast on TV, that makes it an OVA by any definition. Series length or number of years in production is irrelevant.
