Handa was so sheltered and had such horrible communication skills that he thought that he was being ostracized when all the kids thought he was a super cool guy that they didn't deserve to be friends with. The prequel is MISUNDERSTANDINGS done right.

Keep note that you best stick with matching nuances as much as possible for series with a lot of build up or else you'll end up with problems popping up much later in the series like in Bleach or Gaim. Feel free to have a blast on comedy series though since feeling is much more important than accuracy there.
