Apparently it went like this.
The game was to be released and the anime was the adaptation. Game got delayed and the anime had no real source material to work with and was already into production so they couldn't cancel it. They decided to work off the basic character sheets and made the comedy masterpiece.
I can only imagine how the adaptation would go. I can see Milfie winning because main girl status. Even though Vanilla and Chitose fought for my heart, Mint's route would probably make the best

Yep, apparently so. Not sure if the behind the scenes production was the same situation, but it's very much like Galaxy Angel in this regard. It's last season (Futari wa Milky Holmes) was even a departure from comedy, just like Rune did.
Some anon in past threads has even said that Milky Holmes is pretty much the unofficial spiritual successor to GA because of the similarities.
