The original version of the spirits would be much akin to child soldiers in a war-torn country who have committed plenty of atrocities due to being forced into the role.
Remember that even though Tohka looks 16, mentally she's pretty much a toddler. There would be as much legitimate reason to save a Tohka who's leveled cities as there would be to save a twelve year old child soldier who has a kill count numbering in the dozens. They just don't know better.

In this original scenario mankind would've almost assuredly fired the first shot to cause said spirits to begin raging in the first place. Hell this scenario is left intact in the final draft with Tohka attacking the AST to defend herself as well as causing minor property damage (the spacequake caused the rest) and being labeled "evil" and a target to be eliminated because she endangers humanity. The point is that she's not and she deserves a second chance because all she's ever known is being attacked by strange girls flying through the sky and could learn to co-exist peacefully with humanity if given the opportunity to. The original scenario would've just taken off all the silly training wheels and have her actually attacking what she perceives as the enemy and being the source of the catastrophe herself rather than some odd space-time phenomenon.

Precisely. Just look at Tohka's popularity and haw many covers/votes she has in proportion to DaL. Would have she been liked this much had the story advanced as intended? Maybe or maybe not but the fact remains that DaL become much more acceptable to the general audiences because of the lighter tone it took.
Kurumi's popularity is an odd case (at least for me) in that her design is certainly a hit well outside DaL sphere of influence despite her relatively small screen/LN time in the spotlight. Maybe hers is a case that could have worked with the original story as a difficult character to 'save' from her own twisted sense of justice. her dealings with Shidou under this setting could have been even more stark but oddly familiar as I think one of the reasons the Author uses her so little is to shield her away from Editor-san's influence.
